Yueyang is a big city in the northeastern part of Hunan Province, China. It sits on the eastern side of Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River. It used to be called Yuezhou or Yochow.
Yueyang covers an area of about 14,896 square kilometers. The main city area is about 304 square kilometers. In 2020, about 5 million people lived in Yueyang. Over 1.1 million of these people lived in the main city parts, like Yueyanglou District and Yunxi District.
Yueyang is a very important port city in China. It is the only city in Hunan that handles international trade by water. Its economy is strong, ranking second in Hunan, right after Changsha, the capital city.
The most famous places to visit in Yueyang are the Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake. A popular local food is the delicious Dongting Lake silver fish.

Yueyang's Past: A Look at History
People have lived in the area of Yueyang for over 3,000 years. It was first set up as a special area called Hanchang in 210 AD. This was during the Three Kingdoms period. Before that, it was known as Ximi.
During the Song dynasty (960 – 1279 AD), the city was made very strong. It had walls that were about 4 kilometers long. It became an important military center. This is when it got its current name, Yueyang.
In 1852 AD, during the Taiping Rebellion, rebels took over Yueyang. This was a big step for them as they moved along the Yangtze River valley. When the Republic of China was founded in 1911 AD, Yueyang became a county.
Yueyang Tower: A Famous Landmark
Yueyang Tower is a very old Chinese tower. It stands in Yueyang, on the shore of Lake Dongting. It is one of the "Three Great Towers of Jiangnan". Many tourists visit this famous spot every year.
Getting Around: Transportation in Yueyang
Yueyang has two major bridges that cross the Yangtze River. These are the Jingyue Yangtze River Bridge and the Dongting Lake Bridge.
The city also has its own airport, called Yueyang Sanhe Airport. This helps people travel to and from Yueyang.

Yueyang has many schools and colleges. The biggest college is Hunan Institute of Science and Technology.
