Exploring Lemuy's Villages
Lemuy Island has nine special villages. Most of these villages are located right on the coast.
Villages on the Coast
- Puqueldón: This village can be found on the north coast.
- Aldachildo: Aldachildo is another village on the north coast.
- Ichuac: You will find Ichuac also on the north coast of the island.
- Chulchuy: This village is on the south coast. From here, you can take a ferry to Huicha on Chiloé Island.
- Lincay: Located on the south coast, Lincay has a wooden church that was built in the early 1900s.
- Liucura: Also on the south coast, Liucura has a wooden church built in the middle of the 1800s.
- Detif: This village is situated on the east coast of Lemuy Island.
- Puchilco: On the east coast, Puchilco's wooden church dates back to the 1800s. It features paintings by a Peruvian artist named Miguel Gamarra.
San Agustín: The Inland Village
- San Agustín: This is the only village on Lemuy Island that is not on the coast. It is located in the middle of the island. Its wooden church was built at the beginning of the 1900s.
Lemuy's Historic Churches
The people of Lemuy Island have a strong religious faith. This led them to build eight unique churches across the island. Each church has its own special design and history.
Some of these churches are very old, like the Ichuac, Aldachildo, and Detif churches. They are more than 100 years old! These three, along with 15 other churches in the Chiloé area, have been named World Heritage Sites. This means they are very important historical places that are protected for everyone to enjoy.
Some of the churches also have interesting cemeteries. These cemeteries feature small mausoleums (buildings where people are buried) that are covered with wooden shingles, which is a common building style in the area.
