History of Letterkenny Township
The township got its name from a place called Letterkenny in County Donegal, Ireland. It's like naming a new town after your old hometown!
Some very old and important buildings in Letterkenny Township are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Horse Valley Bridge, the Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church, and the Skinner Tavern. These places help us remember the past.
Where is Letterkenny Township?
Letterkenny Township is in the north-central part of Franklin County. It has two main types of land. The eastern part is a wide, flat area called the Great Appalachian Valley. The western part has two mountain ridges from the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians.
Broad Mountain and Blue Mountain are the mountains on the eastern side. Blue Mountain also forms the western edge of the township. Between these mountains is a place called Horse Valley. A stream called Conodoguinet Creek flows through Horse Valley. It then turns and forms the northern border of the township.
A large government area called the Letterkenny Army Depot is in the southeastern part of the township. Two small towns, Upper Strasburg and Pleasant Hall, are located north of this depot.
The township covers about 70.51 square miles (182.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small amount of water.
