Liassaurus (say "Lie-uh-SAW-rus") means "Lias lizard." It was a type of dinosaur called a theropod. Scientists found its fossil skeleton in England, near a place called Warwickshire. For a while, people thought Liassaurus was the same as another dinosaur, Sarcosaurus. But in 2004, scientists looked at Liassaurus again and decided it was its own unique dinosaur.
What's in a Name?
The name "Liassaurus" comes from "Lias." This is another name for the Early Jurassic period, which is when this dinosaur lived. The specific name, huenei, honors a famous German paleontologist named Friedrich von Huene.
Discovering Liassaurus
Liassaurus was a bipedal dinosaur, meaning it walked on two legs, much like a bird or a human. This dinosaur could grow to be about 6 meters (20 feet) long. That's roughly the length of a small school bus!
