History

Early Days in Lisle

The first settler in what is now DuPage County was Bailey Hobson in 1830. Two brothers, James C. Hatch and Luther A. Hatch, founded the town of Lisle in 1832. They bought land near what is now Ogden Avenue. They started a small farming community. They first called it "DuPage" or "East DuPage." This was because it was close to the east branch of the DuPage River.

In 1831, DuPage County was officially created. Another settlement, Naper's Settlement (now Naperville, Illinois), was founded nearby.

Lisle had many "firsts" in the 1830s. In 1832, James C. Hatch set aside land for the first community burial ground. Today, Lisle Cemetery is one of Illinois' oldest cemeteries. Hatch also opened the first wagon and blacksmith shop. He started Lisle's dairy industry with a creamery. The first Christian group in DuPage County began in 1833. It later became the First Congregational Church of DuPage. The first post office opened in 1834. A log schoolhouse was built that same year.

How Lisle Got Its Name

In 1849, DuPage County created its first townships. An early settler, Alonzo B. Chatfield, suggested the name "Lisle." He was from Lisle, New York. The name was accepted, creating the Lisle Township. The village was officially formed on June 26, 1956. It was also named after Lisle, New York. Another reason for the name change was to avoid confusion. There was another town called DuPage in Will County. Some also say the town was named after S. Lisle Smith from Chicago.

Railroad and Growth

In 1864, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in Lisle. A new train depot was built. A fire destroyed the depot in 1874, but it was rebuilt. Today, you can still take commuter trains from Lisle using Metra.

On July 4, 2006, Lisle celebrated its 50th birthday. They had the biggest fireworks show in Illinois!

Geography

Lisle covers about 7.08 square miles (18.35 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. A small part is water, like rivers and streams. Most of Lisle is in the area drained by the east branch of the DuPage River.
