History of Lismore
The city of Lismore gets its name from Lismore Township. This township was named after a village in County Waterford, Ireland. That Irish village is famous for its beautiful castle. Father C. J. Knauf, from Adrian, suggested the name for Lismore Township.
How Lismore Began
Lismore started because the Burlington Railroad was built through the northeast part of Nobles County. The railroad helped create towns like Reading and Wilmont in 1899. When the railroad tracks reached the area where Lismore is today, on June 9, 1900, at 3:00 pm, the construction of the town began right away.
Early Businesses and Growth
The very first business in Lismore was the St. Croix Lumber company. They sold wood from a tent next to a big pile of lumber. The first actual building was a saloon built by James Beacom. Soon after, the O. B. Bratager store building was built.
Other businesses quickly followed:
- James Montgomery started a small grain elevator.
- James Ramage opened a lumber yard and hardware store.
- The Bank of Lismore opened on September 1, 1900. It became the State Bank of Lismore three months later.
- A livery stable (where horses were kept), a butcher shop, a restaurant, and a blacksmith shop also opened in that first year.
- In 1901, a school house, churches, more businesses, and many homes were built.
By December 6, 1901, the local newspaper, the Lismore Leader, proudly announced how much the town had grown in just over a year. Lismore had a bank, two general stores, a furniture store, two saloons, two pool rooms, two lumber yards, three grain elevators, four coal dealers, a hotel, a hardware store, two machinery companies, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a delivery service, and a newspaper.
Becoming a City
A count of the population on April 10, 1902, showed 186 people living in Lismore. The town quickly became an official city. Its first city council meeting was held on June 17, 1902, with Emil Graf chosen as the president. By the year 2000, Lismore's population was 238.
