List of Halkomelem-speaking peoples facts for kids
This is a list of Indigenous peoples who spoke Halkomelem, an Indigenous language from what is now British Columbia, Canada. Many people from these groups do not speak Halkomelem today.
The term "Halkomelem people" is sometimes used by language experts to mean "people who spoke Halkomelem." However, it's important to know that these groups are not a single ethnic group or nation. They are different First Nations who shared a common language.

Downriver Halkomelem Speakers (Hunquminum)
Peoples who spoke the Downriver dialect of Halkomelem lived in the area from the Stave River west to the mouth of the Fraser River. This also included the Tsleil-Waututh people on Burrard Inlet.

Island Halkomelem Speakers (Hulquminum)
The Island dialect of Halkomelem was spoken on the other side of Georgia Strait, mainly on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
- Cowichan
- The Cowichan name comes from one of several groups that form the Cowichan Tribes government. Their main area is the Cowichan Valley. Other Halkomelem speakers in the area were also called Cowichan.
- The Snaw-na-as (from Nanoose Bay) and Snuneymux (from Nanaimo) peoples also spoke Hulquminum, but they were separate from the Cowichan.
- Other Cowichan groups on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands include the Halalt, Malahat, Penelakut, Lyackson, and Lamalcha.
