Senators usually belong to one of the two main political parties: the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. Sometimes, a senator might be an Independent. This means they don't belong to a major party.

Here's how the Senate is made up by party:

Group Number of Senators
Republican Party 49
Democratic Party 48
Independent 3
Total 100

Two independent senators, Angus King from Maine and Bernie Sanders from Vermont, often work with the Democratic Party. Another independent senator, Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona, also works with the Democrats for committee tasks.

Senators from Each State

Each of the 50 U.S. states has two senators. They are elected by the people of their state to represent them in the Senate. Senators serve six-year terms. Their terms are staggered, meaning not all senators are up for election at the same time. This helps keep the Senate stable.

Senators work on important issues for their states and the country. They vote on new laws, approve treaties, and confirm important government officials. You can find a full list of all current senators and more details about them on the official U.S. Senate website or in other detailed government resources.
