Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Welcome to a list of hills you can find in Gloucestershire, a county in southern England. These hills are not just great for hiking! Many of them are also special places with interesting history, old ruins, and amazing nature. They are popular spots for both locals and visitors to explore.

Understanding Hill Types

When we talk about hills, we often use special terms to describe them. These terms help us understand how important or tall a hill is, especially compared to the land around it.

What is Prominence?

Imagine a hill. Its "prominence" is how much it rises above the lowest point connecting it to any higher ground. Think of it as how much a hill "sticks out" from its surroundings. A hill with high prominence usually offers amazing views because it's the highest point around!

Hill Classifications

Hills are often sorted into groups based on their prominence. Here are the main types you'll find in Gloucestershire:

Class Prominence
Marilyns 150 – 599 m
HuMPs 100 – 149 m
TuMPs 30 – 99 m
Unclassified 0 – 29 m
  • A Marilyn is a hill that rises at least 150 metres (about 500 feet) from the land around it. These are often very noticeable hills.
  • A HuMP (which stands for "Hundred Metre Prominence") is a hill that rises at least 100 metres but less than 150 metres.
  • A TuMP is a hill with a prominence of at least 30 metres but less than 100 metres.

This list mainly includes hills that are 250 metres or taller with at least 30 metres of prominence. It also includes some notable smaller hills.
