Welcome to the amazing Isle Royale National Park! This special place is found in Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes. It's not just one island, but a group of many islands.
The main island, also called Isle Royale, is huge! It's the second largest island in all the Great Lakes. Only Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron is bigger. Isle Royale is about 206.7 square miles (535 km2) in size. This makes it the third largest island in the contiguous United States (the part of the U.S. connected by land). It's also the fourth largest island in the world that's located in a lake!
Isle Royale National Park covers a total area of 894 square miles (2,320 km2). About 209 square miles (540 km2) of this is land. The park includes the large Isle Royale and more than 450 smaller islands around it. About 110 of these smaller islands have official names.
Even though no one lives permanently on these islands, the National Park Service takes care of them. The park is part of Keweenaw County, Michigan. The northern part of the park is managed by Houghton Township, Michigan, and the southern part by Eagle Harbor Township, Michigan.
