Michigan is a state with many islands! It has the second-longest coastline in the United States, right after Alaska. Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes: Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior.
Besides the Great Lakes, Michigan also has over 64,000 inland lakes and ponds. Plus, there are countless rivers. Many of these waterways have their own islands too! Most of Michigan's islands are found in the Great Lakes. Other islands are in important connecting waterways like Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River, the Detroit River, and the St. Marys River.
The biggest island of all is Isle Royale in Lake Superior. This island, along with its surrounding waters and smaller islands, is a special place called Isle Royale National Park. Isle Royale itself is about 206 square miles (534 square kilometers) big. The island with the most people living on it is Grosse Ile. Around 10,000 people call Grosse Ile home. It's located in the Detroit River, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Detroit. Most of Michigan's islands are small and no one lives on them. Some of these empty islands are used for lighthouses. These lighthouses help guide ships safely across the Great Lakes. Other islands are protected as nature reserves. You might find many islands in Michigan with the same name, like Gull, Long, or Round islands!

Islands in Lake Erie
Only Monroe County and a tiny part of Wayne County touch the western side of Lake Erie. The lake's surface is about 571 feet (174 meters) above sea level. Islands in the southern part of Monroe County are part of the North Maumee Bay Archeological District. This area is part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. Islands further north are in the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area. This area is where the Huron River and Detroit River meet Lake Erie. Turtle Island is special because it's the only island in Michigan that is shared with another state, Ohio.

Islands in Lake Huron
Lake Huron is the second-largest of the Great Lakes. It covers an area of about 23,010 square miles (59,590 square kilometers). Michigan is the only U.S. state that borders Lake Huron. The other side of the lake is in Ontario, Canada.
Many of Michigan's islands in Lake Huron are found around Drummond Island. This is in the northern part of the state's lake area. Another big group of islands is the Les Cheneaux Islands archipelago. This group includes dozens of smaller islands. Lots of the islands in Lake Huron are very small and no one lives on them.
Mackinac Island is the most famous island in Lake Huron. It's a very popular place for tourists to visit. Drummond Island is Michigan's second-largest island, after Isle Royale. It's also the most populated island in Lake Huron. In 2010, 1,058 people lived there. While Mackinac Island had 492 residents, thousands more people work or visit there during the summer.
Islands in Lake Michigan
Michigan only has islands in the northern part of Lake Michigan. There are no islands in the southern half of the lake. The biggest and most populated island in Lake Michigan is Beaver Island. It's about 55.8 square miles (144.5 square kilometers) and has 551 residents. Some smaller islands near Beaver Island are part of the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Islands in the St. Marys River
The St. Marys River connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It's located at the eastern tip of the Upper Peninsula. This river also forms part of the international border. So, some islands in the river belong to Ontario, Canada. The biggest islands in Michigan's part of the river are Sugar Island and Neebish Island. Wider parts of the river are known as Lake George, Lake Nicolet, and Munuscong Lake. All of Michigan's islands in this river are part of Chippewa County.

Islands in Grand Lake
Grand Lake is a big lake in Presque Isle County. It covers about 8.8 square miles (22.8 square kilometers). Even though it's not Michigan's largest inland lake, it has the most officially named islands. At its closest point, it's less than 1 mile (1.6 km) from Lake Huron. However, the two lakes are not connected. Grand Lake has 14 islands. Grand Island is by far the biggest one.
