Exploring Local Communities
Hendricks Township is home to a few interesting communities, each with its own history.
Caffey: A Lumber Town Story
Caffey and a nearby spot called Caffey Corner used to be a busy settlement where people worked with lumber. It is located along H-40. West of Caffey, H-40 is also known as the "Hiawatha Trail." This trail splits off at Caffey Corner and goes south to end at US 2. H-40 continues east from Caffey for about 7 miles (11 km) to Trout Lake, and then on to Rudyard.
Caffey had a train station on the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway that was first called "Lewis." But because another town in Michigan was already named Lewis, this place got a post office named "Caffey." It was named after William N. Caffey, a veteran of the Civil War who became the first postmaster in November 1899. The post office closed for a while in 1909 but reopened in 1913 with Mr. Caffey as postmaster again. It closed for good in December 1916.
Epoufette: A Place of Rest
Epoufette is a small, unofficial community within the township. It's located on US 2 right on the shore of Lake Michigan. Back in 1848, a government surveyor found an Ojibwe village here. Later, in 1859, Amable Goudreau started a business catching and selling fish.
The name "Epoufette" comes from the French language and means "place of rest." Early French settlers gave it this name because they believed that Father Jacques Marquette used this harbor as his first stop when he traveled down Lake Michigan from St. Ignace. A special marker was put up in 1986 to remember this historic fishing village. Epoufette even had a summer post office that operated for several years between 1959 and 1972.
Fiborn Quarry: A Stone Settlement
Fiborn Quarry was another settlement in the area. It grew up around a place where people dug out limestone, which is a type of rock used in building and other industries.
