Denver's Tall Buildings: A Look Back
The first tall building in Denver was the Equitable Building, built in 1892. It was 143 feet (43 meters) tall and had nine floors. The building often called Denver's "first skyscraper" is the Daniels & Fisher Tower. It was finished in 1910 and stands 325 feet (99 meters) tall.
Denver had a huge building boom from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. During this time, 21 of the city's 27 tallest buildings were built! This includes Republic Plaza, 1801 California Street, and the Wells Fargo Center.
Today, Denver has eight skyscrapers that are over 492 feet (150 meters) tall. Two of these are among the tallest in the whole United States. Denver's skyline is ranked second in the Mountain States (after Las Vegas) and seventeenth in the United States. As of June 2018, there are 201 completed tall buildings in the city.
One of the newest tall buildings in Denver is the Four Seasons Hotel and Tower. It has 45 stories and is 641 feet (195 meters) tall. It's now the fourth-tallest building in Denver and the city's tallest building where people live. The 1144 Fifteenth office tower, finished in early 2018, is over 600 feet tall and is the fifth-tallest building.
Denver is currently building many new residential buildings. More than 20 new projects started in downtown Denver, the Golden Triangle, and RiNo in 2023.
In the 1970s and 80s, many parts of downtown Denver had empty parking lots. Now, the city is working to build on these lots and make the city center more lively. This has been very successful, especially around the Union Station area. What used to be empty land is now full of new homes, shops, and offices. There's also a new bus station, train platforms, and a park. The historic Union Station has been updated with a hotel, restaurants, and shops. In 2016, a new train line connected Union Station to Denver International Airport.
