A Look Back: Little Hartley's History
Little Hartley has a rich history, with some buildings dating back many years.
The Story of Rosedale
The famous property called Rosedale was built in 1839. It was made for a person named William Cummings. At first, it was a licensed inn called the Coach and Horses. Later, its name was changed to Victoria Inn.
In 1903, a man named W.J. Berghofer bought the property. He was also responsible for building Berghofer's Pass at Mount York in 1912. Berghofer renamed the building Rosenthal, but it eventually became known as Rosedale. Today, Rosedale is listed with the National Trust, which means it is an important historical site that needs to be protected.
The Story of Meads Farm
Meads Farm is about two kilometres north-west of Rosedale. Its history goes back to 1856 when Hugh Beattie received a land grant of forty hectares.
Between 1867 and 1880, Meads Farm operated as the Kerosene Inn. Miners who worked at the shale mine in Hartley Vale used to stay there. Over the years, many people owned Meads Farm, including Louis Meads (starting in 1872), Captain George Stevens, and Captain Thomas Rowntree. Captain Rowntree was an early mayor of Balmain. Like Rosedale, Meads Farm is also listed with the National Trust because of its historical importance.
