A Look at Livonia's History
For many centuries, the land where Livonia now stands was home to the Seneca people. They are one of the powerful Iroquois nations. The Seneca called the nearby lake Ga-ne-a-sos, which meant "Berry Place." This name later became "Conesus" in English.
The first European American settler in this area was Solomon Woodruff from Connecticut. He arrived in 1789, after the American Revolutionary War. At this time, the British had given their land claims to the United States. They did not ask the Iroquois nations what they thought. Many Iroquois people were forced to leave their homes. Most of them moved to a large reserve in Ontario, Canada.
The Seneca people living here had to deal with new settlers moving onto their lands. Solomon Woodruff built a simple cabin and planted potatoes. When he returned with his family, he found the Seneca had burned his cabin. Woodruff rebuilt his cabin, and some of his family still live in the area today. He was buried in the Union cemetery.
The village of Livonia grew between Conesus and Hemlock lakes. Many European Americans from New England and New York settled here in the mid-1800s. In the 1850s, a railway line was built to Lakeville. This helped businesses grow and made travel easier in the region.
A special building in the village, the Livonia Baptist Church, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This means it is an important historical site.
