Livonia is a town located in Livingston County, New York. It's a part of the United States. In 2010, about 7,809 people lived here. There's also a smaller village inside the town that shares the name Livonia. The town is on the eastern side of Livingston County.

Many people from Livonia moved to the Midwest in the 1800s. One group settled in Michigan and named their new home Livonia, Michigan, after this town.

History of Livonia

The land where Livonia is now was once home to the Seneca people. They were a strong Native American group, part of the Iroquois confederacy. The Seneca lived here for a long time. They called the big lake nearby Ga-ne-a-sos, which means "Berry Place." Today, we know it as Conesus Lake.

The town of Livonia grew between Conesus Lake and Hemlock Lake. The first European-American settler, Solomon Woodruff, arrived in 1789. The area was known for its many wild berries. The town of Livonia was officially created in 1808. It was formed from a part of the town of Richmond. Later, in 1819, a section of Livonia became the new town of Conesus.

In the 1850s, a railway line was built to Lakeville, which is now part of Livonia. This helped businesses grow and made it easier for people to travel through the area.

Geography of Livonia

Livonia covers about 41 square miles (106 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with about 2.8 square miles (7.3 square kilometers) being water.

The eastern edge of Livonia borders Ontario County. Two important lakes, Conesus Lake and Hemlock Lake, are partly within the town. These lakes are part of the famous Finger Lakes region. Water flows out of the north ends of both lakes. Conesus Lake drains into Conesus Creek, and Hemlock Lake drains into Hemlock Creek. Both of these creeks eventually flow into the Genesee River.

Major roads like U.S. Route 20A run through Livonia from east to west. New York State Route 15 and New York State Route 15A are important roads that go from north to south.
