Llanquihue is a city and commune in Chile. It is located in the Los Lagos Region, specifically in Llanquihue Province. The city sits on the western side of Lake Llanquihue, which is where the Maullín River begins its journey. Llanquihue is about 7 kilometers north of Puerto Varas and 19 kilometers south of Frutillar. These cities are all connected by Chile Highway 5.

History of Llanquihue
Llanquihue became an official commune on June 19, 1968. The government passed a law to create it. The National Congress approved this important decision. The law stated that Llanquihue would be the capital town of the new commune.
Language and Culture
An interesting dialect of German is spoken by some people in this commune. It is called Lagunen-deutsch. This shows the influence of German settlers in the area's history.
Population and Area
According to a 2002 census, Llanquihue covers an area of about 420.8 square kilometers. At that time, it had 16,337 inhabitants. There were slightly more women (8,196) than men (8,141).
Urban and Rural Living
Most of the people in Llanquihue, about 12,728 (77.9%), lived in urban areas. The remaining 3,609 people (22.1%) lived in rural areas. The population of Llanquihue grew by 13.6% between 1992 and 2002.
Local Government
As a commune, Llanquihue is a local administrative division of Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years. The current alcalde for 2021–2024 is Victor Angulo Muñoz, who is an Independent politician.
Representing the People
Llanquihue is part of a larger area for national elections. Its citizens are represented in the Chamber of Deputies by two members. These representatives speak for Llanquihue and several other nearby communes. The commune is also represented in the Senate by two senators from the Los Lagos Region.
Education in Llanquihue
In the past, Llanquihue had a German school. It was called Deutsche Schule Llanquihue.
