History of Puerto Varas
The city of Puerto Varas began in 1853. It was named after Antonio Varas, who was a government minister at the time. German immigrants founded the city. They settled along the shores of Lake Llanquihue. This was part of a special government project to colonize the area. This happened during the time Manuel Montt was president (1851-1861).
The government created the "Llanquihue Lake Colonization Territory" on June 27, 1853. By the end of that year, 212 German families had moved to what would become Puerto Varas. The first area they settled was called La Fabrica. This was where the road from the coast met Llanquihue Lake.
Important moments in the city's early days include opening a Catholic church in 1872. The Deutscher Verein ("German Club") was also founded in 1885. Puerto Varas officially became a "Town" (Título de Villa) in 1897. The area known as the commune of Puerto Varas was formed in December 1925. This happened when the government divided Chile into provinces and communes.
German Architecture
Puerto Varas is known for its unique German-style architecture. Many houses are built from alerce wood. The early settlers brought tools from Europe to build these homes. In 1992, the city was named a "Zona Típica" (heritage zone). This means many buildings are protected.
One famous protected building is the Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesus (Sacred Heart of Jesus Church). It was built in 1918 on one of the highest spots in Puerto Varas. This wooden church is a symbol of the city. Other important protected buildings include Casa Kuschel (built in 1915) and Casa Yunge (built in 1932).
