Lomita Park, California is a small community in San Mateo County. It's not officially a city, but an unincorporated community. It sits right next to San Bruno and is located west of the San Francisco International Airport. You can find it roughly between San Felipe Avenue, El Camino Real, San Juan Avenue, and the old Southern Pacific railroad tracks.

Traveling Through Lomita Park

Early Railroads

The Southern Pacific Railroad bought the original San Francisco and San Jose Railroad. This first railroad line was built way back in the 1860s. The Southern Pacific company used these tracks for both passenger and freight trains. This means they carried people and goods along the route.

Another type of train, called an interurban railroad, ran right next to the Southern Pacific line. This interurban train went from San Francisco all the way to San Mateo. Kids living in Lomita Park used these interurban trains to get to high school.

High School Journeys

From 1902 to 1923, students from Lomita Park traveled to San Mateo High School. Later, from 1923 to 1950, they went to Burlingame High School. But things got much easier in September 1950. That's when Capuchino High School was finished. After that, children from Lomita Park could simply walk to school.

El Camino Real Highway

In 1912, a major road called El Camino Real was paved through San Bruno and Lomita Park. This was a big deal because it was the very first paved state highway in California!

At first, El Camino Real was a two-lane road. But by the late 1920s, it was made wider to four lanes. This highway was once part of a famous route called U.S. Route 101. In the early 1960s, it was renamed State Route 82. Today, El Camino Real is mostly a six-lane highway. It stretches from South San Francisco down to San Jose.

Community Changes

The Post Office Story

In 1927, a post office opened in the community. It was first named "Belmae Park." This name was a combination of the names of Belle Mae Miggis, who was the first person to run the post office. A few years later, in 1933, the name was changed to Lomita Park. The post office itself closed in 1957. However, postal services for the area continued from nearby San Bruno and Millbrae.

Becoming Part of San Bruno

In 1953, the community of Lomita Park officially became part of San Bruno. This process is called annexation. Before this, Lomita Park had its own train station for the Southern Pacific line. It also had some of its own community services. Even though it's now part of San Bruno, the area is still known as the "Lomita Park district" of San Bruno.

Local School

The Lomita Park Elementary School is located just south of the San Bruno city limits. This school is part of the Millbrae School District.
