Colonel Luca Parmitano (born 27 September 1976) is a famous Italian astronaut. He works for the European Space Agency (ESA). He was chosen to be an ESA astronaut in May 2009.

Parmitano is also a Colonel and a test pilot for the Italian Air Force. He made history as the first Italian and third European to command the International Space Station (ISS) during his time on Expedition 61.

About Luca Parmitano

Luca Parmitano grew up in Catania, Italy. He has two daughters. When he's not flying, Luca enjoys many fun activities. He loves scuba diving, snowboarding, and skydiving. He also likes to lift weights and swim. Reading and listening to music are some of his other favorite hobbies.

Luca Parmitano's Education

Luca Parmitano finished high school in Catania, Italy, in 1995. Before that, in 1993, he spent a year studying in California, USA. This was part of an exchange program.

In 1999, he earned a master's degree in political sciences. He studied at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. His main project was about international law. The next year, in 2000, he graduated from the Italian Air Force Academy.

Luca continued his training in the United States. In 2001, he completed basic pilot training with the U.S. Air Force in Texas. He also took a special course in Germany in 2002.

In 2003, he became an Electronic Warfare Officer in Italy. He also completed a Tactical Leadership Programme in Belgium in 2005. In 2009, Luca earned another master's degree. This one was in experimental flight test engineering in France. This training helped him become a test pilot.

Special Awards and Recognition

In 2007, Luca Parmitano received a special award. It was the Silver Medal of Aeronautic Valor from the Italian President. He earned it for safely landing his plane after a bird hit it.

There is even an asteroid named after him! It is called 37627 Lucaparmitano.

Luca Parmitano is a Colonel in the Italian Air Force. He is also a skilled astronaut for the European Space Agency. He has flown for over 2,000 hours. He is trained to fly more than 20 types of military aircraft. These include both planes and helicopters. He has flown over 40 different types of aircraft in total.

After becoming a pilot in 2001, Parmitano flew AMX aircraft in Italy. He did this from 2001 to 2007. During this time, he became highly skilled in flying these planes. He was a combat-ready pilot and a mission leader. He also led the training section for his squadron.

In 2007, the Italian Air Force chose him to become a test pilot. He trained at a special French test pilot school in Istres.

Luca Parmitano at ESA

In May 2009, Luca Parmitano was chosen to be an ESA astronaut. He was part of the 2009 group of astronauts.

In 2014, he joined a special training called "cavenaut." This ESA CAVES training takes place in caves. He trained with other astronauts like Scott D. Tingle and Matthias Maurer.

In July 2015, Luca became an "aquanaut." He was the commander of the NEEMO 20 crew. This training happens underwater.

In 2016, Parmitano took part in the first ESA PANGAEA mission. This mission focused on geology training. In May 2017, he also joined the CAVES eXpedition One. This expedition explored hot caves in Sicily.

Expedition 36 and 37: Volare Mission

In February 2011, Luca was assigned to his first space mission. He became a flight engineer for Expedition 36 and 37. This was a long mission to the International Space Station. He launched into space aboard Soyuz TMA-09M on May 28, 2013. He arrived at the ISS the next day. His mission was named Volare, which means "to fly" in Italian. This name reminds people of a very famous Italian song.

In May 2013, Luca worked with a young student named Abigail Harrison. She was 15 years old at the time. Abigail became his "Earth liaison" during his mission. She shared Luca's experiences in space with her online followers. She is known as "Astronaut Abby" on social media and her blog.

On July 9, 2013, Luca Parmitano made history. He became the first Italian to do a spacewalk. He and Chris Cassidy went outside the ISS. They installed power cables and collected research samples. They also did other important maintenance tasks. During the spacewalk, Luca even rode on the ISS's robotic arm. This was to help install new parts for the station.

His second spacewalk on July 16, 2013, was cut short. After only 1 hour and 32 minutes, water started filling his helmet. This was very dangerous because he could have drowned. It also made it hard for him to see and get back to the airlock. Engineers later found that a filter in his suit was blocked. This caused water from the cooling system to back up. Luca returned to Earth on November 11, 2013.

Expedition 60 and 61: Commanding the ISS

In May 2018, ESA announced that Luca Parmitano would go back to the space station. He launched on Soyuz MS-13 on July 20, 2019. He served as a Flight Engineer on Expedition 60. Then, he became the Commander of Expedition 61. This made him the first Italian to command the ISS.

On August 13, 2019, Luca became the first DJ in space! He played electronic music from the ISS for a festival in Ibiza. On November 15, he went outside the ISS again. This was his first spacewalk since the water incident in 2013. He did at least four spacewalks to fix the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS).

Luca Parmitano worked with NASA astronaut Andrew R. Morgan on these spacewalks. NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir helped them from inside the station. They used the Canadarm2 robotic arm. These spacewalks were very difficult. They were described as the "most challenging since Hubble repairs". It was the first time astronauts had to cut and reconnect cooling lines in space.

The repair of the AMS was finished after four spacewalks. In the last spacewalk, Luca found a small leak in one of the AMS cooling lines. They were able to fix the leak during that spacewalk.

Expedition 61 ended when Soyuz MS-13 landed on February 6, 2020. Luca Parmitano, Aleksandr Skvortsov, and Christina Koch were on board.
