Luis Germán Astete (born May 28, 1832, in Lima, Peru – died July 10, 1883, in Huamachuco, Peru) was a brave Peruvian sailor and politician. He is remembered as a hero of the War of the Pacific, where he fought and died in the Battle of Huamachuco.

Early Life and Naval Training

Luis Germán Astete was born in Lima. His father was Pedro de Astete Núñez, and his mother was María Manuela Fernández de Paredes y Noriega. When he was baptized, the president of Peru, Agustín Gamarra, was his godfather.

He went to school at the Real Convictorio de San Carlos in Lima. In 1850, he joined the Military School as a midshipman. That same year, he traveled to France on the frigates Algerie and Serieuse to continue his naval training.

Early Naval Career

In 1853, Luis Astete became an Ensign. He joined the crew of the new frigate Amazonas on its journey from England to Peru. In 1854, he was made commander of the schooner Hector.

During this time, he faced some trouble and was sent away to Chile for a short period. He soon returned to Peru and lived in Arequipa. He stayed there until early 1855, when a rebellion ended the government of José Rufino Echenique.

Family and Political Life

In 1856, Luis Astete married Peregrina Guerrero y Álvarez Calderón. They had six children together.

In March 1855, he was promoted to second lieutenant. He served on the ships Liberty and Guise. However, he left the navy again in January 1857 due to his support for General Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco during a civil war.

From 1860 to 1864, he was elected as a deputy (a type of representative) for Huaraz. He chose to give up a promotion in the navy because he felt it was not right to hold both positions at the same time.

Key Battles and Commands

In 1866, Luis Astete was on the steamship Sachaca. He took part in the Battle of 2 May against the Spanish fleet. This battle was part of the Chincha Islands War.

After the government was restored in 1868, he was promoted to frigate captain. In 1871, he took a break from the navy. He then joined an uprising led by Nicolás de Piérola against President Mariano Ignacio Prado.

During this uprising, he took command of the ironclad ship Huáscar. He was named commander of the National Regenerative Squadron.

Battle of Pacocha

On May 29, 1877, Luis Astete, commanding the Huáscar, faced two ships from the Royal Navy. These were the Shah and the Amethyst. This fight is known as the Battle of Pacocha.

The battle ended without a clear winner. After this, the rebels surrendered to the forces loyal to President Prado.

Role in the War of the Pacific

When the War of the Pacific began, Luis Astete was a captain. He was sent to the United States to buy weapons and a ship for Peru. However, this mission was stopped due to political changes.

He returned to Peru and was made prefect (a high official) of Callao. He also commanded the defense batteries during the Bombardment of Callao. He protected the port from the Chilean fleet.

He fought bravely in the battles of San Juan and Miraflores. To prevent Peruvian boats from falling into enemy hands, he ordered some of them to be destroyed in January 1881.

Fighting in the Sierra

After Lima was taken over by the Chileans, Luis Astete went to the mountains (the sierra). He was elected as a deputy for Alto Amazonas to the National Assembly in Ayacucho. However, he chose to join the resistance movement instead.

He joined the Campaign of La Breña, which was led by Andrés Avelino Cáceres. He fought in several important battles, including Marcavalle, Battle of Pucará, and Concepción.

Death at Huamachuco

In the Battle of Huamachuco, Luis Astete commanded the 4th Army Division of the Center. He died during the battle from a shot to his forehead. He is remembered as a hero who gave his life for Peru.
