Luke Smith is a character from the British children's science fiction TV show The Sarah Jane Adventures. He is played by Tommy Knight. This show is a spin-off from the popular series Doctor Who.

Luke is a main character in The Sarah Jane Adventures. He appears in both the TV episodes and the audio stories. He also showed up in three episodes of Doctor Who. These include "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" (2008). He was also in the Tenth Doctor's final episode, "The End of Time, Part Two" (2010).

In the story, Luke is a special human created by aliens called the Bane. They made him from thousands of DNA samples. He was later adopted by the show's hero, Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen). Luke is very smart, like a child prodigy. But he sometimes struggles with social skills because he was created as a teenager.

Luke Smith's Story

How Luke Was Introduced

Luke Smith first appeared in the very first episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures. This was the New Year's Day special called "Invasion of the Bane" (2007). An alien called Mrs Wormwood created him. She used DNA from people visiting the Bane's Bubble Shock! drink factory.

Luke was made to be a perfect example of a human. He looked like a normal teenager. But he didn't have a belly button because he wasn't born naturally. He was super intelligent and had a perfect memory.

During a factory tour, Luke woke up and escaped. He ran away with a girl named Maria Jackson and Sarah Jane Smith. Sarah Jane was an investigative journalist and their neighbor. The Bane sent aliens to catch them. But Luke saved the day. He remembered a very long number sequence. This number caused an explosion in the factory.

After this, Sarah Jane adopted Luke. She named him "Luke Smith". Her smart supercomputer Mr Smith helped with the adoption papers. Sarah Jane told Luke and Maria her secret. She used to travel through time with the Doctor. She now investigates alien plans on Earth.

Adventures with Sarah Jane

The episode Revenge of the Slitheen started Series 1 (2007). It showed Luke's first day at school. He found it hard to fit in. He couldn't lie or understand jokes. His super intelligence also made him different from other kids.

Luke and Maria became friends with Clyde Langer. Luke also made an enemy of Carl, a smart boy who was jealous of him. The friends found out that Carl and some teachers were aliens. They were members of the Slitheen family. Luke had accidentally helped their plan to turn off the Sun. He gave them an equation they needed. Luke tricked the Slitheen. Most of them were trapped and exploded.

Luke, Clyde, and Maria helped Sarah Jane fight other aliens. These included Gorgons and the war-like Uvodni. In Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?, a villain called the Trickster erased Luke and Sarah Jane from history. But Maria managed to fix it.

In the Series 1 finale, The Lost Boy, Sarah Jane had to give Luke up. A couple claimed he was their son. But this was a trick by the Slitheen. They wanted to use Luke's special powers. They planned to make the Moon crash into Earth. Luke and Sarah Jane stopped them and were reunited.

Luke was mentioned in the Doctor Who Series 4 episode "Turn Left" (2008). In an alternate world, Luke, Sarah Jane, Clyde, and Maria died. Later, in the Doctor Who Series 4 finale, Luke saw a Dalek invasion of Earth. He helped the Tenth Doctor and his friends. They used the TARDIS and Mr Smith to bring Earth back to its place.

In Series 2 of The Sarah Jane Adventures (2008), Maria moved away. Luke then became friends with Rani Chandra. She soon learned about their alien adventures. In The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith, Luke met his grandparents. This happened because of a time travel plot by the Trickster.

In Series 3 (2009), an alien showed Luke a vision. He saw himself graduating from university very young. He met the Doctor in person in The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith. He helped defeat the Trickster again. Luke was not in The Eternity Trap because of his school exams. In the finale, The Gift, Luke got sick from alien spores. Sarah Jane had to fight hard to save him.

In the Doctor Who special "The End of Time" (2010), Luke was almost hit by a car. The Doctor saved him. The Doctor then waved goodbye to Sarah Jane and Luke.

In Series 4 (2010), Luke left for the University of Oxford. This happened in The Nightmare Man. He had finished his exams early. He still appeared often by webcam to talk to his friends and mother. In the finale, Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke returned fully. He helped Rani and Clyde save his mother from an alien. He used his intelligence and help from K-9 to win.

He also appeared in the Series 5 opener, Sky (2011). He was on a webcam. His clothes were lent to Sky Smith, another special child. Sky became Luke's adopted sister. Luke made his final appearance in the series finale, The Man Who Never Was. He visited from Oxford and met Sky in person for the first time. They bonded as siblings.

Farewell, Sarah Jane

Luke appeared again in "Farewell, Sarah Jane" (2020). This was a special story years after the TV series ended. Luke was working with UNIT. He found out that Sarah Jane had passed away. He organized her funeral with Clyde and Rani. Everyone celebrated Sarah Jane's life.
