Life Before Politics
Her Family Background
Małgorzata Maria Grabska was born in Ursus, Warsaw, when Poland was a communist country. Her father, Maciej Władysław Grabski, was a Professor of Technical Science. He also led the Foundation for Polish Science for many years. Her mother, Helena Nowakowska, used to work for a press company.
Małgorzata's family has a strong history in Polish politics. Her great-grandfather, Władysław Grabski, was a famous politician and economist. He served as Prime Minister of Poland and helped fix Poland's money system. Her other great-grandfather, Stanisław Wojciechowski, was the President of Poland from 1922 to 1926. Her paternal grandmother, Zofia Wojciechowska-Grabska, was a painter.
Her Youth and Home
Kidawa-Błońska grew up in the same house where her grandparents lived. This house was full of history, with old furniture, paintings by her grandmother, and photos of her ancestors. Her great-grandfather built the house for his son and his wife in 1927. The house had a beautiful park, orchard, and vegetable garden.
After the Warsaw Uprising during World War II, her great-grandparents, Stanisław and Maria Wojciechowski, moved into the house. They had been rescued from the destroyed city of Warsaw. They lived there for the rest of their lives.
Education and Early Career
Małgorzata went to the oldest high school in Warsaw, the Klementyna Hoffmanowa High School. In 1983, she earned a Master's degree in Sociology from the University of Warsaw.
She also had a career in film and culture. She attended classes at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw because she was interested in acting, though she did not become an actress. In 1981, she met Jan Kidawa-Błoński, who was a film director. They got married in 1983. They have one son, Jan, who was born in 1983.
From 1985 to 1987, she worked at a film studio. From 1994 to 2005, she worked with her husband at their company, Gambit Production. She helped produce films, TV shows, and commercials. One of their most famous films was Destined for Blues.
Political Journey
Starting in Politics
Kidawa-Błońska began her political journey as an independent member of the Freedom Union party. In 2001, she joined the new Civic Platform party. She became a Councillor in the Warsaw City Council.
She was first elected to the Sejm (the lower house of the Polish Parliament) in 2005. She won again in the 2007 and 2011 elections. In 2010, she became the press spokeswoman for Bronisław Komorowski's presidential campaign.
In 2014, she became the Press Spokesperson for the Council of Ministers. This meant she spoke for the government. She held this role again in 2015 for Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz's government.
Leading the Sejm
On 25 June 2015, Kidawa-Błońska was elected Marshal of the Sejm. This is a very important role, as the Marshal leads the meetings of the Sejm. She received 244 votes from the members of the Sejm. During her time as Marshal, she oversaw the oath of office for President Andrzej Duda in August 2015.
After the 2015 election, she was re-elected to the Sejm. On 12 November 2015, she became a Deputy Marshal of the Sejm. In this role, she also joined the Culture and Media Committee in the Sejm. She continued as Deputy Marshal until 2023.
2019 Parliamentary Election
In September 2019, the Civic Coalition chose Kidawa-Błońska as their candidate for Prime Minister. She said that Poland was in a "very difficult moment" and that people wanted a country where everyone respected each other. She received a very high number of votes in the election.
Even though she had strong support, her coalition did not win enough seats in the Sejm to form the government. However, they did win control of the Senate by working with other opposition parties. On 12 November 2019, she continued her role as Deputy Marshal.
2020 Presidential Election
Becoming a Candidate
Kidawa-Błońska decided to run in the Civic Platform's presidential primaries. This was to become the party's candidate for the 2020 presidential elections. She won the primary election in December 2019. This made her the Civic Platform's official candidate for president.
Her Presidential Campaign
After becoming the candidate, Kidawa-Błońska focused on campaigning against the current president, Andrzej Duda. However, due to the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020, she temporarily stopped large public meetings for her campaign.
Withdrawing from the Race
The date of the presidential election was changed because of the pandemic. On 15 May 2020, Kidawa-Błońska announced that she would no longer be a candidate for president. She was later replaced by Rafał Trzaskowski as the Civic Platform's candidate.
2023 Senate Election
In the 2023 Polish parliamentary election, she was elected to the Senate of Poland from the Warsaw area.
On 13 November 2023, she was elected as Marshal of the Senate. This is the leader of the upper house of the Polish Parliament. She is expected to hold this position for two years.
