Early Life and Family
Growing Up in Poland
Małgorzata Maria Grabska was born in Ursus, Warsaw, Poland, in 1957. Her family was very important in Polish history. Her father, Maciej Władysław Grabski, was a professor and led the Foundation for Polish Science. Her mother, Helena Nowakowska, used to work for a newspaper and was a fencer.
Małgorzata's great-grandfathers were famous politicians. One was Władysław Grabski, who was a Prime Minister of Poland. He helped fix Poland's money problems. Her other great-grandfather was Stanisław Wojciechowski, who was the President of Poland from 1922 to 1926. Her paternal grandmother, Zofia Wojciechowska-Grabska, was a painter.
Małgorzata grew up in the same house where her grandparents lived. This house was full of old furniture, paintings by her grandmother, and photos of her family. Her great-grandparents, Stanisław and Maria, moved into the house after the Warsaw Uprising when their own city was destroyed.
Education and Career
Małgorzata went to high school in Warsaw. In 1983, she earned a degree in sociology from the University of Warsaw. She was also interested in film and culture.
In 1981, she met Jan Kidawa-Błoński, who was a film director. They got married in 1983. Together, they worked at their company, Gambit Production, from 1994 to 2005. She helped produce films, TV shows, and commercials. One of their most famous films was Destined for Blues.

Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska started her political career in 2001. She joined the Civic Platform party and became a council member in Warsaw.
In 2005, she was elected to the Sejm, which is like one of the houses of the Polish Parliament. She was re-elected in 2007 and 2011. In 2010, she was the press spokesperson for Bronisław Komorowski's presidential campaign.

Leading the Sejm
In June 2015, the Marshal of the Sejm, Radosław Sikorski, resigned. Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska was chosen by her party to take his place. She was elected as the Marshal of the Sejm on June 25, 2015. This meant she was in charge of leading the meetings and work of the Sejm.
As Marshal, she oversaw the swearing-in of President Andrzej Duda in August 2015.
After the 2015 election, she became a Deputy Marshal of the Sejm. This role meant she helped the new Marshal, Marek Kuchciński, lead the Sejm. She also joined the Culture and Media Committee in the Sejm. In 2019, when Marek Kuchciński stepped down, she ran for Marshal of the Sejm again but lost to Elżbieta Witek.
Running for Prime Minister and President
In September 2019, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska was chosen as the candidate for Prime Minister for the Civic Coalition. She said that Poland was in a "very difficult moment" and that people wanted a country where everyone respected each other. She received a lot of votes in the election, but her party did not win enough seats to form the government. However, they did win more seats in the Senate.
Later in 2019, she decided to run for President. She won her party's primary election in December 2019, becoming the official candidate for the Civic Platform. She started campaigning against the current president, Andrzej Duda.
When the coronavirus outbreak happened in March 2020, she stopped her large campaign events. She also called for people to not vote in the May 10 election because of changes to the voting rules. On May 15, 2020, she decided to step down from the presidential race. Rafał Trzaskowski took her place as the candidate.
