Maartin Allcock (born Martin Allcock; January 5, 1957 – September 16, 2018) was a very talented English musician and record producer. He was known as a multi-instrumentalist, which means he could play many different musical instruments. Maartin played the guitar, keyboards, violin, bass guitar, and even bagpipes! He was a member of famous bands like Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull.

Maartin Allcock's Life and Career

Maartin Allcock was born in Middleton, England. He loved music and studied it at colleges in Huddersfield and Leeds.

  • Starting Out: Maartin began his professional music career in January 1976. He played in dance bands and folk clubs. His first tour was in 1977 with a musician named Mike Harding.
  • A Chef in Training: In 1978, Maartin went to Brittany, France, for a short visit. He ended up staying longer and learned how to cook there! When he returned to Manchester, he even became a qualified chef and worked in the Shetland Islands for a while.

Joining Famous Bands

In 1981, Maartin joined a Celtic folk group called the Bully Wee Band. This led to him joining even more famous groups:

  • Fairport Convention: From October 1985 to December 1996, Maartin was the lead guitarist for the British folk rock band Fairport Convention. He played with them for 11 years!
  • Jethro Tull: At the same time, from January 1988 to December 1991, he was the keyboardist for the rock band Jethro Tull. He was very busy playing with both bands!
  • The Mission: In the summer of 1991, he also played keyboards for another band called The Mission.

Later Career and Legacy

In the early 2000s, Maartin started working as a session musician and record producer from his home in Snowdonia, Wales.

  • Session Musician: A session musician is someone who is hired to play on recordings or live shows for other artists, but isn't a permanent member of their band. Maartin played on over 200 albums for many different musicians.
  • Record Producer: A record producer helps artists create their music albums. They guide the recording process and help shape the sound of the music. Maartin produced ten albums for the Welsh record label Sain.
  • He also toured as a bass guitarist and tour manager for the American songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman.

In 2018, Maartin shared sad news that he was ill and would perform for the last time at the Cropredy Festival. Fairport Convention played at the festival on August 11. Maartin Allcock passed away on September 16, 2018. He left behind a huge amount of amazing music.
