Macrovipera is a group of large, venomous snakes called vipers. You can find them in dry, desert-like areas across North Africa, the Middle East, and on the Milos Archipelago in the Aegean Sea. They are often called the Large Palearctic Vipers. There are four different types, or species, of Macrovipera known today.
About These Vipers
Most Macrovipera snakes can grow quite long. They can reach lengths of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet). The only exception is the Milos Viper, which is a bit smaller.
Where Macrovipera Live
These large vipers live in dry places. Their homes stretch from Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in North Africa. You can also find them further east in countries like Pakistan, Kashmir, and India. To the north, they live on the Milos Archipelago in the Aegean Sea, and in Armenia and Dagestan in Russia.
Types of Macrovipera
There are four recognized species within the Macrovipera group:
- Desert Viper, M. deserti
- Blunt-nosed Viper, M. lebetina
- Moorish Viper, M. mauritanica
- Milos Viper, M. schweizeri
