Madingley Hall, built in 1543, is now part of the University of Cambridge.

Madingley Hall was built in 1543 by a man named Sir John Hynde. His family lived there for many years, until the 1860s. The Hall is surrounded by beautiful parkland.

In 1860, Queen Victoria rented the Hall for her son, Edward. He later became King Edward VII. He lived there while he was a student at the University of Cambridge. The family sold the Hall in 1871 to Henry Hurrell. Later, in 1905, it was sold to Colonel T. Walter Harding.

When Colonel Harding passed away in 1927, he left the Hall to his son, Ambrose Harding. Ambrose was a zoologist, someone who studies animals. His daughter, Rosamond Harding, a famous music historian, lived there for 20 years. Eventually, the family sold the Hall to the University of Cambridge.

Madingley Hall and the University of Cambridge

Since 1948, the University of Cambridge has owned Madingley Hall. This includes the Hall itself, its park, and the surrounding farmland. Today, it is the home of the University's Institute of Continuing Education. This institute helps people continue their learning.

The Madingley Hall estate has large English gardens. It also includes about 1150 acres of countryside. The university takes care of all these areas.

The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is a special place. It is a large military cemetery and a memorial for American soldiers. It was officially opened in 1956. This important site is located on the edge of Madingley, close to the city of Cambridge.

About 3,811 American soldiers who died in World War II are buried here. Also, the names of 5,127 other Americans are written on a wall called the Wall of the Missing. These were soldiers who lost their lives but whose bodies were never found or identified. Many of them died during the long Battle of the Atlantic or in air attacks over Northwest Europe. The University of Cambridge gave the land for this cemetery to the United States government after World War II.
