Madison Maree Wilson, born on May 31, 1994, is an amazing Australian swimmer. She competes in both backstroke and freestyle races. Madison has won many medals at the Olympic Games and world championships. She has also been part of six Australian relay teams that set world records. Her most recent record was at the 2022 Short Course World Championships.

About Madison Wilson

Early Life and Family

Madison Wilson was born in a town called Roma in Australia. She grew up in Yeppoon, a coastal town. There, she went to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. She also swam with the local Yeppoon Sharks swimming club. This is where she was first chosen for a Queensland state team.

Madison is engaged to an Australian cricketer named Matthew Short. They have a son together, named Austin Wilson Short.

Swimming Achievements

Madison has won many medals throughout her swimming career. She is known for her strong performances in relay races. A relay race is when a team of swimmers each swim a part of the race.

In 2014, Madison won two medals at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Doha, Qatar. She earned a silver medal in the women's 4x100-metre medley relay. She also got a bronze medal in the women's 4x200-metre freestyle relay.

At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia, Madison won three more medals. She helped the Australian team win a gold medal in the women's 4x100-metre freestyle relay. She also won a silver medal in the individual women's 100-metre backstroke race. Plus, she took home a bronze medal in the women's 4x100-metre medley relay.

Olympic Games Success

Madison represented Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She swam in the 100-metre backstroke final, finishing 8th. Even though she swam in the heats (early races) for the 4x100-metre freestyle and medley relay teams, she still received medals. This is because the teams she helped qualify went on to win gold and silver in their finals.

Because of her success at the 2016 Olympics, Madison received a special award. It was called the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2017.

Madison also swam in the heats for the women's 4x100-metre freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (held in 2021). Her team, which included Mollie O'Callaghan, Bronte Campbell, and Meg Harris, had the fastest qualifying time. Even though Madison didn't swim in the final race, she still received a gold medal. This is because she helped the team get to the final where they won!

Setting World Records

Madison Wilson has been part of several Australian relay teams that have set new world records. These records show how fast and strong the Australian swimming teams are.

In long course (50-metre pool) events, Madison helped set three world records:

  • In 2019, her team set a record in the 4x200-metre freestyle relay.
  • In 2022, they set another record in the 4x100-metre mixed freestyle relay.
  • Also in 2022, at the Commonwealth Games, her team broke the 4x200-metre freestyle relay record again.

In short course (25-metre pool) events, Madison has also been part of record-breaking teams:

  • In 2022, her team set a world record in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay.
  • They also set a record in the 4x200-metre freestyle relay in 2022.
  • Another record was set in 2022 for the 4x50-metre medley relay. This record is still current!

Madison has also been part of an Olympic record-setting team. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, her team set an Olympic record in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay during the heats.
