Mahtomedi (/ˌmɑːtˈmd/ MAH-toh-MEE-dy) is a city in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. It is home to 8,138 people, based on the 2020 census. Mahtomedi is a suburb of St. Paul. It sits between St. Paul and Stillwater, right on the shores of White Bear Lake.

Geography

Mahtomedi is located about 20 minutes southeast of St. Paul. St. Paul is the capital city of Minnesota. The city covers about 5.75 square miles (14.9 square kilometers). About 3.49 square miles (9.0 square kilometers) of this is land. The rest, about 2.27 square miles (5.9 square kilometers), is water. This water includes part of White Bear Lake.

Important roads in Mahtomedi include Interstate 694 and Mahtomedi Avenue. The city is north of State Highway 36 and east of I-694. Highway 12 runs east to west through Mahtomedi. Highway 244 runs north to south and is also known as Dellwood Road.

History

Mahtomedi was first planned out in 1883. The city's name comes from the Dakota people. It means "White Bear Lake." The word mathó means "bear," and mde (or bdé) means "lake." A post office opened in Mahtomedi in 1884. It is still open today on Wildwood Road.

Education

Mahtomedi has its own school district. This district serves students from several nearby areas. These areas include Dellwood, Grant, Hugo, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs, and Willernie. It also serves parts of Lake Elmo, Oakdale, Stillwater, and White Bear Lake.

The schools in the district are:

  • Wildwood Elementary (for grades K-2)
  • Oscar Henry Anderson Elementary (for grades 3-5)
  • Mahtomedi Middle School (for grades 6-8)
  • Mahtomedi Senior High School (for grades 9-12)

In 2013, Mahtomedi High School was named the best high school in Minnesota.

Besides the public schools, Mahtomedi is also home to St. Jude of the Lake School. This is a private Catholic school. It teaches students from preschool up to eighth grade.

Part of Century College is in Mahtomedi. Century College is a community college. It is part of the MNSCU system. The other part of the college is in White Bear Lake. Century Avenue divides the two cities and the college campuses. A long footbridge connects the West Campus and East Campus of Century College.

High School Athletics

The school colors for Mahtomedi Senior High School are blue and gold. Their mascot is the Zephyr. Mahtomedi is well known for its girls' soccer team. They are also known for their high school football team.

The girls' soccer team has won the state championship many times. They won in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The football team won the state championship in 2005. They won in an overtime game against the Academy of Holy Angels. On November 5, 2009, Mahtomedi's Boys Varsity soccer team won their first state championship against Hermantown.

The Mahtomedi Zephyr gymnastics team has won state championships 10 times. Their first win was in 1982. The Mahtomedi Girls' tennis team won their first state title in 2016. They beat the Edina Hornets, who had won the previous 19 years. Most recently, the Mahtomedi Boys’ Hockey Team won the state championship in 2023. They also won in 2020.

The Zephyr mascot was first inspired by the 1930s car, the Lincoln Zephyr. However, the Zephyr mascot now refers to Zephyrus. Zephyrus is the Greek god of the west wind.
