Railroad History in Manchester
Manchester was once a very important place for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. It was a major hub where train crews and engines were swapped. Freight cars were sorted here to go to their correct destinations. This was one of the biggest train yards in the world!
The yard had many buildings to help trains. These included a large roundhouse for engines and a coaling tower. There were also places for fixing cars and tracks. Workers had an office, an ice house, and a place to rest.
In the mid-1960s, the railroad started to have problems. The big train yard was not needed as much anymore. By 1972, the yard officially closed down. Today, you can still see some old buildings and tracks.
