Manohar Joshi (born December 2, 1937 – died February 23, 2024) was an important Indian politician. He came from the state of Maharashtra. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999. Later, he was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha (a big part of India's Parliament) from 2002 to 2004. He was a key leader of the Shiv Sena political party. He was also one of the few Indians to be elected to all four main types of legislatures (law-making bodies).

Early Life and Education
Manohar Joshi was born on December 2, 1937. His birthplace was Nandavi in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. He studied hard and earned two important degrees. He received his Masters of Arts (MA) and a law degree (LLB) from Mumbai University.
In 1964, he married Anagha Joshi. They had three children: a son named Unmesh, and two daughters named Asmita and Namrata. His granddaughter, Sharvari Wagh, became an actress. She started her acting career in the 2021 film Bunty Aur Babli 2.
Starting Kohinoor Institutes
After finishing his law degree, Manohar Joshi first worked for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This is the local government body for Mumbai. However, he soon decided to start his own project.
He founded the Kohinoor technical and vocational training institute. His idea was to help young people learn useful skills. These skills included being electricians, plumbers, or repairmen for TVs and scooters. He also offered training for photographers.
Soon, Kohinoor grew very popular. He opened many branches in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. Later, he also got involved in construction and other businesses. He also started the Kohinoor Business School. He also founded the Kohinoor-IMI School of Hospitality Management in Khandala.
Manohar Joshi's Political Journey
Manohar Joshi had a long and successful career in politics. He held many important positions.
Starting in Local Politics
Joshi began his political journey in 1968. He was elected as a municipal councillor in the Bombay Municipal Corporation. This was his first step into public service with the Shiv Sena party.
In 1972, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. This is one of the two law-making bodies for the state of Maharashtra. He served there for three terms, until 1989. From 1976 to 1977, he also served as the Mayor of Mumbai. In 1990, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
Becoming Chief Minister
In 1995, the Shiv Sena party formed a government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This was a big moment for Maharashtra. Manohar Joshi became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He was the first Chief Minister from a party other than the Indian National Congress. He held this top position from 1995 to 1999.
Serving in National Parliament
After his time as Chief Minister, Joshi moved to national politics. In 1999, he won the General Elections from Central Mumbai. This meant he became a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha is the lower house of India's Parliament.
From 2002 to 2004, he served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The Speaker is like the referee of the Lok Sabha. They make sure debates run smoothly and rules are followed. He was part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at that time.
In 2006, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha. This is the upper house of India's Parliament. He served a six-year term there.
Later Years and Passing
Manohar Joshi passed away in Mumbai on February 23, 2024. He was 86 years old. He had a cardiac arrest (a heart problem) the day before. He was admitted to Hinduja hospital but sadly died from health issues related to his age.
