Creates Mansfield Hollow Lake (Lake Naubesatuck)

Mansfield Hollow Lake is a large reservoir (a man-made lake) located in Connecticut. It sits right on the edge of Windham County and Tolland County, Connecticut. This important lake provides drinking water for the town of Willimantic. It also plays a big role in controlling floods in the Thames River area.

The lake was created by the Mansfield Hollow Dam. Both the lake and the dam are part of the Mansfield Hollow State Park and the Mansfield Hollow Wildlife Area. The United States Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the dam. It greatly helps to reduce flooding along the Quinebaug, Shetucket, and Thames rivers. Building the dam started in 1949 and finished in 1952. It cost about $6.5 million back then.

About Mansfield Hollow Dam

The Mansfield Hollow Dam is a very long structure. It is made of rolled earth with strong stone on its slopes. The dam stretches for about 12,420 feet (that's over two miles!). It stands about 68 feet high.

The dam also has a special part called a spillway. This is a concrete wall that is 690 feet long. The top of this wall is 16 feet lower than the very top of the dam. This design helps control water levels safely.

Lake Size and Flood Control

The permanent lake at Mansfield Hollow Dam is called Naubesatuck Lake. It covers about 450 acres. When there's a lot of rain, the dam can hold back even more water. The area used for flood storage can reach about 1,880 acres. This flood storage area covers parts of Mansfield, Windham, and Chaplin.

The entire project, including the dam and all the land around it, covers 2,472 acres. The Mansfield Hollow Dam can hold a huge amount of water for flood control. It can store up to 8.3 billion gallons of water! This helps protect many communities downstream from flooding.
