Marc-André ter Stegen (born 30 April 1992) is a German professional football player. He plays as a goalkeeper for the Spanish club Barcelona, where he is a captain. He also plays for the Germany national team. Many people think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He is known for his quick reflexes, great passing, and how well he plays with the ball at his feet.

Ter Stegen played four seasons in the Bundesliga (Germany's top league) for Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played 108 league games for them. In 2014, he moved to Barcelona for €12 million. In his first season in Spain, he helped Barcelona win three major trophies: the league, the Spanish Cup, and the Champions League.

He played for Germany at different youth levels and made his debut for the senior national team in 2012. He was part of the German teams that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016 and won the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2022 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2024.

Club Career

Starting at Borussia Mönchengladbach

Marc-André ter Stegen started his football journey at his hometown club, Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the 2010–11 season, he became a key player for their reserve team. He was often seen on the first team's bench.

At that time, the main team was struggling to avoid being moved down to a lower league. In February 2011, a new manager, Lucien Favre, took over. The team's results started to get better. However, the main goalkeeper, Logan Bailly, was not playing consistently.

Fans wanted Ter Stegen to play for the first team. On 10 April 2011, the manager decided to start Ter Stegen. He played very well, and the team's defence became much stronger. He kept his spot for the rest of the season. He helped Mönchengladbach avoid relegation by keeping four clean sheets in the last five games. During this time, he made amazing saves against Borussia Dortmund, helping his team win 1–0.

Becoming First Choice

Ter Stegen became the team's main goalkeeper. The number 1 shirt was given to him. In the summer of 2011, Bayern Munich signed Manuel Neuer, another famous German goalkeeper.

Neuer's first game was against Ter Stegen's Mönchengladbach. Ter Stegen played incredibly well, and Neuer made a mistake that led to Bayern losing 1–0. After this match, Borussia Mönchengladbach had a surprising run, challenging for the league title. Ter Stegen and young player Marco Reus were the team's stars.

Later Seasons with Mönchengladbach

After Reus and another player, Dante, left the club, Ter Stegen became Mönchengladbach's biggest star. He continued to be the first-choice goalkeeper. In February 2013, there were rumours that he had agreed to join La Liga club Barcelona. However, he denied this at the time.

In the 2013–14 season, Ter Stegen stayed with Mönchengladbach. On 6 January 2014, he turned down a new contract. This made people think he would leave the club soon. In his last home game for Mönchengladbach on 5 May, he said a tearful goodbye to the fans.

Moving to Barcelona

First Season: Winning the Treble

On 19 May 2014, it was announced that Ter Stegen would be the new goalkeeper for Barcelona. He signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee was €12 million. He said joining Barcelona was the right choice for him.

Ter Stegen got injured before the first league match. Because of this, another goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo, became the main league goalkeeper. Ter Stegen did not play in Barcelona's league-winning season. However, he was the first-choice goalkeeper for the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) and the UEFA Champions League.

He played his first Champions League game on 17 September, keeping a clean sheet in a 1–0 win. He helped Barcelona win the Copa del Rey final 3–1 in May 2015. A week later, he played in the Champions League Final in Berlin, which Barcelona won 3–1 against Juventus. He even won an award for the "Best Save" in the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich.

Second Season and Rotation

His second season started with a win in the 2015 UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla. Barcelona won 5–4 in extra time. He made his La Liga debut on 12 September 2015.

In March 2016, Ter Stegen said that playing only 25 games a season was not enough for him. He hoped his good performances would lead to more playing time.

Becoming Barcelona's Main Goalkeeper

Ter Stegen had some injuries at the start of the 2016–17 season. He missed some games because of this. He became Barcelona's main goalkeeper after Claudio Bravo left for Manchester City in August 2016.

On 13 September 2016, Ter Stegen saved a penalty against Celtic in the Champions League. This helped Barcelona win 7–0. On 2 October 2016, he made two mistakes that cost Barcelona the game against Celta Vigo, losing 4–3. He apologized but said he would not change his playing style.

He played a big part in Barcelona's famous 6–1 comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. He also made an amazing 12 saves in a 3–2 win against Real Madrid in the league. This kept Barcelona in the race for the La Liga title.

New Contract and Amazing Saves

On 29 May 2017, Ter Stegen signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2022. His buyout clause (the amount a club would have to pay to buy him) was raised to €180 million.

In October 2017, he made important saves against Antoine Griezmann of Atlético Madrid. This helped Barcelona keep their unbeaten record in the league. He also had a fantastic game against Athletic Bilbao, making brilliant saves. By November 2017, Barcelona had conceded the fewest goals of any club in Europe's top five leagues. Ter Stegen saved 23 out of 24 shots on target, which is a 96% save rate!

On 17 April 2018, Ter Stegen was captain for Barcelona for the first time. This was in a 2–2 draw against Celta Vigo.

On 24 November, Ter Stegen reached 100 clean sheets for Barcelona in a Champions League match. On 6 January 2021, he played his 250th game for the club. This made him the fifth goalkeeper with the most appearances in Barcelona's history. That year, he won the 2020–21 Copa del Rey with the club.

Trophyless Season and New Captaincy

In the 2021–22 season, Barcelona did not win any trophies. They finished second in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League and Europa League.

On 30 December 2022, Ter Stegen was named Barcelona's fourth captain. He won his fifth La Liga title with Barcelona. He also won his first Zamora Trophy for letting in only 18 goals in 38 games. His 26 clean sheets in the league equalled a record set in 1993–94.

Current Season

On 11 August 2024, Ter Stegen became Barcelona's new captain. In September, he got a knee injury during a match against Villarreal. This injury means he will miss the rest of the 2024–25 season. Despite his injury, he lifted his first trophy as captain on 12 January 2025, after Barcelona won the Supercopa de España final 5–2 against Real Madrid.
