Marchington Lake is a beautiful lake in Ontario, Canada. It's located in the Kenora District, close to a town called Sioux Lookout. All the water from this lake eventually flows into Hudson Bay.

How Marchington Lake Got Its Name

Marchington Lake was named after a man named William Marchington. William was a writer and later worked as an editor for a big newspaper in Canada called the 'Globe & Mail'. He also wrote for newspapers in England. William had a friend who made maps (a cartographer). This friend asked to use William's last name to name some places in the wild areas of Ontario.

Water Flow in Marchington Lake

Marchington Lake is about 22.5 km (14.0 mi) long, stretching from the southwest to the northeast. It has two main bays. Northeast Bay is at the far end of the lake. McDougall Bay forms a large hook shape at the southwest corner. There's also a narrow arm that looks like a spike, reaching 5 km (3.1 mi) southeast from Northeast Bay.

The Marchington River flows into McDougall Bay. This same river also flows out of the lake from the southwest corner, near a place called McDougall Mills. The Sturgeon River is another important river that flows into the lake's spike-shaped arm. The North River adds water to the middle of the lake on its northwest side.

Other smaller streams that flow into the lake include Watin Creek, Kinniwap Creek, Mall Creek, Martin Creek, and Kee Creek. The water from Marchington Lake travels through the English River, then the Winnipeg River, and finally the Nelson River before reaching Hudson Bay.

Railway Near the Lake

The Canadian National (CN) has a major railway line that crosses the southeastern part of Marchington Lake near Robinson. The railway then goes inland for a bit. After that, it runs along the southwest side of the lake, passing by Ghost River and McDougall Mills. This railway is a very important part of Canada's transportation system.
