Margarita Teresa of Austria was a Spanish princess who became the Holy Roman Empress. She was also the Queen of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia. Born on July 12, 1651, she was a very important person in the 17th century. She is famously known as the main subject in the painting Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez.

Her Early Life

Margarita Teresa was the daughter of King Philip IV of Spain. Her mother was Mariana of Austria. She was the older full-sister of King Charles II of Spain. Charles II was the last king from the Spanish Habsburg family.

Margarita Teresa was her father's favorite child. He lovingly called her "my joy." She was born an Archduchess of Austria and an Infanta of Spain. This meant she was a princess of both Spain and Austria. In Austria, people knew her as Margarete Theresia.

She was also the half-sister of Maria Theresa of Austria. Maria Theresa later became the wife of Louis XIV of France, the famous "Sun King."

Her Royal Marriage

Margarita Teresa married her uncle, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. This kind of marriage was common among royal families back then. On December 5, 1666, Margarita Teresa arrived in Vienna with a grand ceremony. The official wedding took place seven days later, on December 12. Even after they were married, Margarita Teresa continued to call her husband "uncle."
