Marine on St. Croix began in 1839 as Marine Mills. It was important because it had the first commercial sawmill on the St. Croix River. Two lumbermen from Illinois, David Hone and Lewis Judd, built the sawmill. They saw many white pine trees in the area. They named the mill after their hometown, Marine, Illinois.
The sawmill started working in August 1839. This made it the first commercial sawmill in Minnesota. It first used water power, then steam power. The mill operated until 1895. It processed over 197 million board feet of lumber. The original wooden buildings are gone, but you can still see the foundations. The Marine Mill site is now a historic place managed by the Minnesota Historical Society.
Besides the old mill, Marine on St. Croix has other historic buildings. These include the General Store (built in 1870), the Stone House Museum (1872), the Village Hall (1888), the Lutheran Church, and the Fire Hall.
