Marion was once part of a large land deal called the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The first settlers arrived in the area around 1795.

How Marion Became a Town

The Town of Marion was officially created on April 18, 1825. It was formed from a nearby town called Williamson. When it was first created, it was named "Winchester."

However, its name was changed in 1826 to honor Francis Marion. He was a brigadier general from South Carolina who fought bravely in the American Revolutionary War.
