Mark Chao (Chinese: 趙又廷; Wade–Giles: Chao Yu-t'ing; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tiō Iū-têng) was born on September 25, 1984. He is an actor from Taiwan who also has Canadan citizenship. Mark Chao became famous after his first TV show, Black & White, in 2009. He even won an award for Best Actor for this role.
He worked with director Doze Niu on movies like Monga (2010) and Love (2012). Later, he started acting in more films in China. Some of these movies include Caught in the Web (2012), So Young (2013), and Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013). He also starred in the popular TV series Eternal Love (2017).
Mark Chao was recognized on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list. He was 100th in 2011 and moved up to 36th in 2017.

Early Life and Education
Mark Chao's father is Allen Chao, who is also a well-known actor and TV host. Mark went to the University of Victoria in Canada. He earned two degrees there, one in sociology and another in economics. After finishing his studies, he began his acting career in Taiwan.
Mark Chao's Acting Career
Mark Chao started his acting journey in 2009 with the TV drama Black & White. He played a brave and honest police officer named Wu Yingxiong. This role quickly made him very popular. He won the Best Actor award at the 44th Golden Bell Awards for his performance.
First Films and Awards
His first movie was Monga in 2010. This gangster film, directed by Doze Niu, was a big hit with both critics and audiences. Mark won the Best Newcomer award at the Asian Film Awards for his role in Monga.
In 2012, Mark worked with director Niu again in the movie Love. He also starred in First Time with Angelababy. He played his character Wu Yingxiong again in Black & White Episode I: The Dawn of Assault. This movie was a prequel to his TV series. That same year, he acted alongside Gao Yuanyuan in Caught in the Web, directed by Chen Kaige. He won the Best Actor award at the Huabiao Awards for this film.
Success in Chinese Cinema
In 2013, Mark Chao starred in Zhao Wei's first movie as a director, So Young. He played a smart university student in this film. In the same year, he took on the role of Di Renjie in Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon, directed by Tsui Hark.
He returned as Wu Yingxiong in Black & White: The Dawn of Justice (2014), which was a sequel to Black & White Episode I: The Dawn of Assault. He won the Best Actor award at the 16th Huading Awards for this performance.
Mark Chao played Hu Bayi in Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe (2015). This movie was based on the popular book series Ghost Blows Out the Light. The film was successful at the box office. In 2016, he appeared in the Chinese-French movie The Warriors Gate.
Return to Television and Recent Work
After eight years, Mark Chao returned to TV in 2017 with the fantasy romance drama Eternal Love. At first, some people were unsure about him playing the main male role. However, he soon received a lot of praise for his acting. After the show aired, his popularity grew a lot, and he received many new movie offers.
In 2018, Mark starred in the romance film Till the End of the World, which was filmed in Antarctica. He also played Di Renjie again in Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings. That same year, he was cast in the historical drama film Saturday Fiction. In 2024, he appeared in the film Her Story.
Personal Life
Mark Chao was in a relationship with his Black & White co-star Ning Chang from 2009 to 2011. They confirmed their relationship in 2014.
Mark Chao married Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan in 2014. They met while working on the movie Caught in the Web. In June 2019, they welcomed their daughter, Rhea Chao.
