The Marshall Islands is a small island nation. It has taken part in the Summer Olympic Games five times. The country has not yet competed in the Winter Olympic Games.

The Marshall Islands first joined the Olympics at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. In those games, five athletes from the Marshall Islands competed. This is the largest number of athletes they have sent to a Summer Games so far. No athlete from the Marshall Islands has ever won an Olympic medal.

About the Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands is an island nation in Micronesia. It is located in the western Pacific Ocean. You can find it between Hawaii and Australia. In 2008, about 60,000 people lived there.

This island nation was once controlled by the United States. Before that, Japan and Germany ruled it at different times. The Marshall Islands became a self-governing country in 1979. In 1986, it gained full independence. This happened through an agreement with the United States. The country is made up of 29 atolls and five single islands.

The Marshall Islands National Olympic Committee was created in 2001. It was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 2006. This recognition meant the Marshall Islands could send its athletes to the Olympic Games.

The other athletes were "wildcard entries." This means they were invited to compete even if they didn't meet the usual strict qualification rules.
