Martin James Guptill, born on September 30, 1986, is a famous New Zealand cricketer. He used to play for his country as an opening batter in all types of cricket games, especially the shorter ones.
Guptill was the first New Zealander and only the fifth player ever to score a huge 200 runs or more in a One Day International (ODI) match! He also holds the record for the highest score in Cricket World Cup matches, scoring an amazing 237 runs without being out. This is also the second highest score ever in all ODIs.
In March 2021, Guptill played his 100th Twenty20 International (T20I) match. He was also part of the New Zealand teams that finished second in the Cricket World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019.
Guptill has scored over 600 T20I runs at the Eden Park cricket stadium. He is the first and only player to score more than 500 and 600 T20I runs at just one stadium.
Martin Guptill officially announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2025. He had last played for New Zealand in October 2022.

About Martin Guptill
Martin Guptill was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1986. He went to Kelston Primary and Kelston Boys' High School before moving to Avondale College. There, he played cricket and was a student leader. His wife is a journalist named Laura McGoldrick. His cousin, Michael Guptill-Bunce, also plays cricket for Auckland.
His Nickname: Two Toes
Martin Guptill has only two toes on his left foot. When he was 13 years old, he had an accident with a forklift and lost three toes. Because of this, his teammates in the New Zealand cricket squad call him "Two Toes."
Playing for Teams
In New Zealand, Guptill plays for the Auckland team. He also plays for Suburbs New Lynn in club cricket. He played his first major cricket match in March 2006. In his second turn at batting, he scored 99 runs. In 2011, Guptill played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in England.
Playing in T20 Leagues
Guptill has played for many different teams in popular Twenty20 (T20) cricket leagues around the world:
- He played for Mumbai Indians in the 2016 Indian Premier League.
- He also played for Kings XI Punjab in the 2017 Indian Premier League.
- In 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for the 2019 Indian Premier League.
- In April 2021, he joined Karachi Kings for the 2021 Pakistan Super League.
- In July 2022, he was signed by Kandy Falcons in the 2022 Lanka Premier League.
- In October 2023, Guptill joined Urbanrisers Hyderabad for the Legends League Cricket.
- In 2024, he played for Biratnagar Kings in the 2024 Nepal Premier League. He was the first player to score fifty runs in this league.
Martin's International Cricket Career
Guptill first played for New Zealand in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006.
ODI Debut and Early Success
He made his first One Day International (ODI) appearance for New Zealand on January 10, 2009. This game was against the West Indies in Auckland. Guptill became the first New Zealander to score a century (100 runs) in his very first one-day match! He scored 122 runs without being out. This was the highest score for a New Zealander on their ODI debut. He was also the first New Zealander to bat through an entire ODI innings without being dismissed.
He played his first Test cricket match against India in March 2009. For his great playing in 2009, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named him in their World ODI team.
Awards and Big Scores
For his excellent playing in the 2011–12 season, Guptill won the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal. He was also named the T20 Player of the Year by New Zealand Cricket for that season.
During New Zealand's tour of England in 2013, Guptill scored two centuries in a row without being out. He scored 189 runs without being out, which was the highest score by a New Zealander in an ODI at that time.
World Cup Heroics
Guptill made his highest score ever in the 2015 World Cup. He scored an incredible 237 runs without being out against the West Indies. This happened in the quarter-finals at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. He was the first player to score a double century in a knockout match of a World Cup. New Zealand scored 393 runs in that game, which was the highest total ever in a World Cup knockout match at that time. Even though he had three "ducks" (scoring zero runs) in earlier matches, he finished the tournament as the highest scorer with 547 runs.
Later Career and Retirement
In May 2018, he received a new contract from New Zealand Cricket. In April 2019, he was chosen for New Zealand's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In August 2021, Guptill was named in New Zealand's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. On November 3, 2021, during a T20 World Cup match, Guptill became the second batter to score 3,000 runs in T20I cricket.
In 2023, Guptill joined the Trinbago Knight Riders team for the Caribbean Premier League. He has played 58 matches in this league for different teams, scoring over 1500 runs.
After not being chosen for the 2022 India T20 series, Guptill decided to end his national contract. This brought his long international career to a close. On January 8, 2025, Guptill officially announced his retirement from international cricket. His career lasted 13 years, during which he played 367 games. He scored 2586 runs in 47 Test matches, 7346 runs in 198 ODIs, and 3531 runs in 122 T20Is.
Amazing Records and Achievements
- Guptill scored two centuries in a row against England in 2013 without being out. He scored 330 runs in that three-match series, which was a world record for most runs in a three-match ODI series at the time.
- He was the first New Zealander and the fifth player overall to score a double century (200 runs or more) in an ODI. His score of 237 not out is still the highest individual score in World Cup cricket and the second highest score in all ODIs.
- Guptill held the record for the highest score by an opening batter who stayed in the game until the end of an ODI (237*).
- He was the first person to face a pink ball in a special day-night Test match in November 2015. He was also the first person to be dismissed in a day-night Test.
- Guptill scored the fastest fifty (50 runs) by a New Zealander in an ODI. He reached 50 runs in just 17 balls, which is one of the fastest fifties ever.
- He has three ODI scores over 180 runs, which is more than any other New Zealand cricketer.
- In January 2018, Guptill became the second New Zealand player to score a century against every other full member Test-playing nation.
- As of February 2019, Guptill had scored the second most runs in T20I cricket. He was the highest scorer until Rohit Sharma broke his record.
- As of April 2021, Guptill had scored over 600 T20I runs at the Eden Park cricket stadium. He is the only cricketer to score more than 500 and 600 T20I runs at a single stadium.
- As of September 2022, Guptill had scored 3497 runs, which is the third most runs in T20I cricket.
Best Performances
As of February 2023, Guptill has scored three centuries in Test matches, 18 centuries in ODIs, and two centuries in Twenty20 International matches. In total, he has made 14 centuries in first-class cricket, 24 in List A cricket, and four in Twenty20 matches as of January 2019. Two of his centuries were double-centuries (200 runs or more).
Guptill's first international century was in his very first ODI match for New Zealand against the West Indies in 2009. He scored 122 runs without being out. The New Zealand captain, Daniel Vettori, called it "one of the best I've seen in a long time."
He then set a new ODI record for New Zealand in June 2013, scoring 189 runs without being out against England. This was the fifth highest score in any ODI at the time.
Guptill set another new ODI record for New Zealand when he made his highest score ever, 237 runs without being out, in the 2015 World Cup against the West Indies. This amazing innings was the second highest individual score in ODI history and is still Guptill's highest score in any form of cricket. His other double-century was for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in a 2015 County Championship match. This is his only first-class double century as of January 2019.
