Martin James Guptill (born 30 September 1986) is a former cricket player from New Zealand. He was an opening batter, meaning he was one of the first players to bat for his team. He mostly played in shorter games called limited-overs matches.

Guptill made history as the first New Zealander to score a "double century" in a One Day International (ODI) match. This means he scored 200 runs or more in a single game. His score of 237 not out is the highest ever in a Cricket World Cup match. It is also the second highest score in all One Day Internationals.

In March 2021, Guptill played his 100th Twenty20 International (T20I) match. He was also part of the New Zealand teams that finished second in the 2015 and 2019 World Cup finals. He has scored over 600 T20I runs at Eden Park stadium. He is the only player to score more than 500 and 600 T20I runs at one stadium. Martin Guptill officially retired from international cricket in January 2025. His last game for New Zealand was in October 2022.

About Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1986. He went to Kelston Primary and Kelston Boys' High School. Later, he moved to Avondale College, where he played cricket and was a prefect. His wife is a journalist named Laura McGoldrick. His cousin, Michael Guptill-Bunce, also plays cricket for Auckland.

His Nickname "Two Toes"

Guptill has only two toes on his left foot. When he was 13, he had an accident with a forklift and lost three toes. Because of this, his teammates in the New Zealand cricket squad call him "Two Toes."

Playing for Clubs and T20 Teams

In New Zealand, Guptill plays for the Auckland team. He also plays for Suburbs New Lynn in local club cricket. He played his first major professional cricket match in March 2006.

Guptill has played for many different teams around the world in T20 leagues. These include:

In 2024, he joined Biratnagar Kings to play in the 2024 Nepal Premier League. In December 2024, he became the first player to score 50 runs in a single game in the Nepal Premier League.

Playing for New Zealand

Guptill first played for New Zealand in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006.

ODI Debut and Early Success

He made his first One Day International (ODI) appearance for New Zealand on 10 January 2009. This was against the West Indies in Auckland. In that game, he became the first New Zealander to score a century (100 runs) in his very first ODI match. His score of 122 not out was the highest debut score for New Zealand in an ODI. It was also the second highest debut score ever in ODIs. He was also the first New Zealander to bat through an entire ODI innings without being out.

He played his first Test cricket match against India in March 2009. For his great playing in 2009, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named him in their World ODI team.

Awards and Big Scores

Guptill won the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for his excellent performance in the 2011–12 season. He was also named the T20 Player of the Year by New Zealand Cricket for that season.

During New Zealand's tour of England in 2013, Guptill scored two centuries in a row without being out. He scored 189 not out, which was the highest score by a New Zealander in an ODI at that time.

World Cup Achievements

Guptill broke his own record in the 2015 World Cup. He scored an amazing 237 runs not out against the West Indies in the quarter-finals. This made him the first player to score a double century in a World Cup knockout match. New Zealand scored 393 runs in that game, which was the highest total ever in a World Cup knockout match at that time. Even though he had three "ducks" (scoring zero runs) in earlier matches, he ended the tournament as the highest scorer with 547 runs.

In April 2019, he was chosen for New Zealand's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In August 2021, Guptill was also part of New Zealand's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. On 3 November 2021, he became the second batsman to score 3,000 runs in T20I cricket.

Retirement from International Cricket

After not being chosen for the 2022 India T20 series, Guptill decided to end his contract with New Zealand Cricket. This brought his long international career to a close. On 8 January 2025, he officially announced his retirement from playing for his country. He played 367 international games in total over 13 years.
