Martin Kližan's Tennis Journey

Early Career and Junior Success

Martin Kližan showed great promise from a young age. In 2005, he won the European Junior Championship for players under 16. He won both the singles and doubles titles. His doubles partner was his fellow Slovak player, Andrej Martin.

The next year, Martin achieved a big win at the 2006 French Open. He won the boys' singles competition, which is a major junior Grand Slam title. By January 2007, he was ranked the No. 1 junior player in the world.

Turning Professional and First Big Wins

Martin Kližan became a professional tennis player in 2007. In 2010, he played in his first main Grand Slam tournament, the US Open. Later that year, he won his first Challenger tournament in his hometown of Bratislava. This helped him break into the top 100 tennis players in the world by September 2011.

Grand Slam Breakthrough and Top 30 Ranking

The year 2012 was a big one for Martin. At his first Wimbledon tournament, he won a very long first-round match. He then reached the second round. He also played for Slovakia in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

His best Grand Slam performance came at the 2012 US Open. He made it to the fourth round, which was his best result at a major tournament at that time. On his way, he surprised many by beating the fifth-seeded player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. This success helped him reach the top 30 in the world rankings.

Challenges and Comeback in 2014

After a strong 2012, Martin faced some challenges in 2013. He had some good results, like reaching the quarterfinals in Rotterdam, which helped him reach his career-high ranking of World No. 26. However, he also had some tough losses and dealt with a wrist injury.

In 2014, Martin made a great comeback. He started the year well at the Australian Open, reaching the third round. This helped him get back into the top 100 players.

He then won his second main-circuit title at the BMW Open in Germany. He beat top players like Mikhail Youzhny and Tommy Haas, and then defeated Fabio Fognini in the final. This was his second time beating Fognini in a final. At the French Open, he reached the third round, which was his best result there so far. He even beat World No. 11 Kei Nishikori. Later that year, he got a big win against Rafael Nadal at the China Open.

Winning More Titles (2015-2016)

Martin continued his success in 2015. He won his third ATP doubles title at the Rio Open with his partner Philipp Oswald. He also played for Slovakia in the 2015 Davis Cup, helping his country win.

In April, Martin won his third ATP singles title in Casablanca. He then reached the semifinals in Barcelona.

In 2016, he won his fourth title at the Rotterdam tournament. He had an amazing run, saving eight match points on his way to the final. He beat Gaël Monfils in the final. Martin then won his second ATP 500 title at the 2016 German Open, beating Pablo Cuevas in the final.

Injuries and Challenges (2017)

The year 2017 was difficult for Martin due to injuries. He reached the quarterfinals in a few tournaments like Sofia and Rotterdam. However, his ranking dropped because he was defending a lot of points from his big win in Rotterdam the previous year. He had to retire from some matches due to injuries, including at Wimbledon against Novak Djokovic. After this, he fell out of the top 100 rankings.

Sixth ATP Title (2018)

In 2018, Martin started to find his form again. He won the Indian Wells Challenger tournament. At the Barcelona Open, he achieved a big win by beating Novak Djokovic for the first time. He reached the quarterfinals there, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

Martin then won his sixth ATP title at the 2018 Generali Open Kitzbühel in Austria. He had a fantastic tournament, beating top seed Dominic Thiem and saving two match points in another match. This win meant he had won all six of his ATP World Tour finals. He later played Thiem again in the final of the 2018 St. Petersburg Open, but this time Thiem won.

Later Career and Retirement (2019-2021)

In 2019, Martin reached the third round of the French Open again, matching his best result there. He also played for Slovakia in the 2019 Davis Cup.

Martin Kližan announced his retirement from professional tennis in June 2021. He played his last match at Wimbledon that year.

Comeback to Tennis (2023-2024)

After retiring, Martin tried new things, like running for mayor, but he missed tennis. After watching some of his old matches, especially his win against Nadal in 2014, he decided to make a comeback!

In September 2023, he started training again. In December 2023, he played his first tournament since his retirement. In 2024, Martin won four ITF tournaments, which are smaller professional events. These wins helped him climb back up the rankings. By the end of 2024, he was back in the world's top 300 players, showing his determination to return to the sport he loves.
