Early Life and First Steps
Marvin Humes was born on 18 March 1985, in Greenwich, London. His father is from Jamaica, and his mother is Scottish. He is the middle child, with two brothers named Leon and Jackson.
Marvin started his music journey in a band called VS. This group was created by Blue member Simon Webbe. However, the band split up soon after forming and releasing one album. Marvin also acted in Holby City on the BBC for three years, from 2000 to 2003. He played a character named Robbie Waring in 14 episodes. When he was 14, he was a presenter on a children's TV show called K-Club. This show helped kids learn about computers.
Music Career
Forming JLS and The X Factor
Oritsé Williams wanted to create his own boy band. He met Marvin Humes through friends. Marvin already had experience in R&B and pop music from being in the band VS. Next, Aston Merrygold joined the group. He was known for his athletic skills and had been on a children's TV show called Fun Song Factory. Finally, JB Gill joined because of his great "musical ear" and harmonies.
The four became good friends and formed a group called UFO. This stood for Unique Famous Outrageous. They signed with a company called Tracklacers and created a new sound they called "Jack the Lad Swing." This name combined "Jack the lad" with the urban music style of new jack swing. UFO quickly signed with Epic Records. In late 2007, they won their first award at the Urban Music Awards for Best Unsigned Act. They won for their mix of "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King and "Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston.
In 2008, UFO tried out for The X Factor. They had to change their name because another group was already using "UFO." So, they chose the name JLS, which stood for Jack the Lad Swing. The judges on The X Factor often said JLS was the best band the show had ever seen. In week 7, JLS was in the bottom two, but they were saved by the judges' votes. In week 9, after performing "Umbrella" and "I'm Already There", judge Simon Cowell even predicted they would win.
JLS made it to the final and performed "Hallelujah." However, Alexandra Burke won the competition, and JLS finished as runners-up. After the show, Simon Cowell's record company decided not to sign JLS. But JLS's manager believed in them and helped them sign a record deal with Epic Records in January 2009.
JLS: Success and Farewell
After The X Factor, JLS signed with Epic Records. Their first two songs, "Beat Again" and "Everybody in Love", both became number one hits in the UK. Their first album, JLS, came out on 9 November 2009. It sold over one million copies in the UK.
JLS won many awards, including British Breakthrough and British Single ("Beat Again") at the 2010 BRIT Awards. They also won several MOBO Awards for Best Song, Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, and Best Album. In 2012, they won their fifth MOBO Award for Best Video for "Do You Feel What I Feel?". JLS was named the UK's hardest-working band for two years in a row, in 2011 and 2012.
In 2010, JLS signed a record deal in the United States. Their song "Everybody in Love" was released there, but it didn't become a hit. Back in the UK, "The Club Is Alive" became their third number one song in July 2010. Their song "Love You More" was the official song for Children in Need in 2010 and became their fourth UK number one. "She Makes Me Wanna" featuring Dev was their fifth UK number one. JLS sold more than 10 million records worldwide.
In December 2012, Marvin signed with an acting agent. He hoped to start an acting career after JLS finished. On 24 April 2013, the band announced they would split up after their fifth album and final tour. JLS's very last performance was on 22 December 2013, during their "Goodbye - The Greatest Hits Tour."
LuvBug: A New Sound
On 23 July 2014, Marvin announced he had formed a new dance music group called LuvBug. The group included 'The White N3RD' and JKAY. They signed with Polydor Records. Their first song, "Resonance" featuring Talay Riley, came out on 5 October 2014. It reached number 13 on the charts.
