Mauritius, a beautiful island nation, first joined the exciting world of the Olympic Games in 1984. Since then, they have proudly sent their best athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games. However, Mauritius has never taken part in the Winter Olympic Games. Interestingly, Mauritius also supported the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow.
A very special moment for Mauritius happened at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. A talented boxer named Bruno Julie won the country's very first Olympic medal! He reached the semifinals in bantamweight boxing and earned a bronze medal. This was a huge achievement for the nation.
The National Olympic Committee for Mauritius was started in 1971 by Ram Ruhee. He was its main leader, called the Secretary General, until he passed away in 2008. This committee is super important because it helps Mauritian athletes get ready for the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in 1972, which meant Mauritius could officially compete.
