Mega Man Star Force, known as Ryūsei no Rockman (流星のロックマン, Ryūsei no Rokkuman, Shooting Star Rockman) in Japan, is an exciting anime and manga series. It is based on the popular video game of the same name.

The anime first aired in Japan on October 7, 2006. It finished on March 29, 2008, with 76 episodes. This series started soon after another Mega Man anime, MegaMan NT Warrior, ended. The manga version was published in CoroCoro Comic starting in September 2006.

In English, the anime was brought over by Viz Media. It first appeared online on Toonami Jetstream on July 23, 2007. Later, it had a special TV premiere on Cartoon Network on August 25, 2007. You could also watch it on Viz Media's Neon Alley starting June 1, 2015.

The story of Mega Man Star Force follows a boy named Geo Stelar. He teams up with an alien partner called Omega-Xis. When they combine their powers through "Electromagnetic Wave Change," they become the hero Mega Man. Together, they fight against different EM wave creatures. These creatures often try to take over or destroy Earth, especially forces from the FM Planet.

The Story of Mega Man Star Force

The year is 220X, and technology has grown super fast. Cities are futuristic, and travel is quick. Three satellites orbit Earth: Pegasus, Leo, and Dragon. They create a network of EM waves that power an invisible EM Wave World. People use devices called Transers to connect with this world and other electronics. The Satella Police handle problems caused by criminals and EM Wave Viruses.

Omega-Xis, a brave warrior from the FM Planet, runs away to Earth. He meets Geo Stelar. Omega-Xis can do an "Electromagnetic Wave Change." This lets him turn humans into "EM Wave Humans" who can move freely in the EM Wave World. With this power, Geo becomes Mega Man, a hero in Echo Ridge.

Omega-Xis holds the key to a powerful weapon called Andromeda. This weapon can destroy planets. Many FM-ians chase Omega-Xis to get the key and destroy Earth. Omega-Xis also knows what happened to Geo's father, who disappeared in a space accident.

At first, the FM-ians hunt Omega-Xis for the Andromeda Key. They eventually get it, but Mega Man uses a power called Star Force to stop Andromeda and destroy the key. Later, the FM-ians team up again, pretending to be humans. They try to make a new Andromeda Key. Gemini Spark leads this effort and brings Andromeda back.

But then, the FM-ian king, Cepheus, comes to Earth to stop the chaos. Geo also meets his father, Kelvin, who is now an EM wave being. Kelvin tells Geo that his place is on Earth, fighting as Mega Man.

The second series, Tribe, is about the lost continent of Mu. This ancient place vanished long ago, leaving behind myths and legends. These are called UMAs (Unidentified Mystery Animals). UMAs are like FM-ians and can also merge with humans.

The UMAs start merging with people to find Mu's treasures, called OOPArts. These powerful items can bring Mu back. Geo and Omega-Xis meet a professor named Doctor Vega. She sends them to find the OOPArts and stop the UMAs. Using the OOPArts, Mega Man gains new forms, like the sword-wielding Thunder Zerker.

Geo later finds out that Doctor Vega and her helper, Hollow, are using him. They want to use the OOPArts to revive Mu and a dangerous force called Le Mu. Mega Man combines the three OOPArts to become Tribe King. He uses this new power to stop Le Mu and seal Mu away again. This series started on November 3, right after the first series ended, and finished on March 29, 2008.

Geo Stelar and Omega-Xis

Geo Stelar, known as Subaru Hoshikawa (星河 スバル, Hoshikawa Subaru) in Japan, is the main hero. He is a kind but lonely fifth-grader. Geo is sad because his father disappeared three years ago, and he stopped going to school. He finds the alien Omega-Xis using special glasses his father left him. Omega-Xis claims to know about Geo's missing dad.

When Geo and Omega-Xis merge, they become Mega Man, Rockman (ロックマン, Rokkuman) in Japan. Geo uses this power to protect his friends and others from the FM-ians. He is helped by Sonia Strumm and Lyra. Geo is often unaware that Sonia and Luna like him. In the manga, Geo is more determined to find his father. Omega-Xis is also funnier in the manga.

Omega-Xis, known as Warrock (ウォーロック, Wōrokku) in Japan, is an AM-ian. Unlike FM-ians, AM-ians can turn humans into EM waves without merging. At first, Omega-Xis only cares about the Andromeda Key. But he slowly starts to care for Geo and Earth.

Mega Man (Geo and Omega-Xis) also appears in the Super Smash Bros. games. He is part of Mega Man's "Final Smash" move, called Mega Legends.

Sonia Strumm and Lyra

Sonia Strumm, known as Misora Hibiki (響 ミソラ, Hibiki Misora) in Japan, is a famous rock star. Like Geo, she is sad about losing a parent, her mother. This helps them become friends. Sonia is energetic and mischievous. She seems to like Geo and has asked him on dates. She even protected him from an attack once.

Sonia's manager often pressures her for money. This leads Lyra to trick Sonia into becoming Harp Note (Lyra Note in English) and attacking people. After being defeated, Lyra becomes an ally. In Mega Man Star Force 2, Sonia is blackmailed into working for Vega to protect Geo. She later helps Mega Man find Mu's location. In the third game, she works with the Satella Police.

Lyra, known as Harp (ハープ, Hāpu) in Japan, is an FM-ian based on the constellation Lyra. She looks like a mix of a harp and a note. She often hides in Sonia's guitar. Lyra acts like a high-class old lady and argues with Omega-Xis. After being defeated by Mega Man, Lyra becomes an ally.

Friends of Geo

Luna Platz

Luna Platz, known as Luna Shirogane (白金 ルナ, Shirogane Runa) in Japan, is the lively and bossy class president. She wears a short blue dress. At first, she tries to make Geo come to school. Luna openly admires Mega Man after he saves her. She seems to have strong feelings for Geo. Her English last name, Platz, is a play on her Japanese name, which means "platinum."

In the anime, Luna is obsessed with Mega Man. She doesn't know he is Geo. She is targeted by "Ophiucus" because of her desire to see Mega Man and her jealousy of Lyra Note. Luna later sees Geo change into Mega Man. She also likes Geo and argues with Lyra Note about who likes Mega Man more.

In the game, Luna's parents try to move her to a new school due to the FM-ian incidents. She is taken over by Ophiucus, becoming Ophiucus Queen (オヒュカス・クイーン, Ohyukasu Kuīn). She holds her parents hostage to get the Andromeda Key. Mega Man defeats her, and she realizes Geo is Mega Man.

Vogue

Vogue is Luna Platz's Wizard companion in the third game. Vogue looks like a bunny in a hat. Vogue is a support Wizard, so Luna cannot Wave Change with her. Vogue helps Luna keep track of important events.

Bud Bison

Bud Bison, known as Gonta Ushijima (牛島 ゴン太, Ushijima Gonta) in Japan, is a tough bully. He tries to make Geo return to school. Bud is not very smart and relies on Luna. He has a crush on Luna. His Japanese last name means "cow," and his English name refers to a Bison.

In Mega Man Star Force, Bud tries to threaten Geo. Omega-Xis's bold personality makes Geo punch Bud. Taurus, an FM-ian, uses Bud's anger. Bud becomes Taurus Fire and tries to harm Geo. Later, Bud barely remembers what happened.

Taurus Fire returns in Mega Man Star Force 2 as a boss. Taurus's leftover energy takes over Bud during an eating contest. He also appears in Mega Man Star Force 3 as Bud's Wizard.

In the anime, Bud gets jealous of Luna spending time with Geo. Taurus enters Bud's body, and he becomes Taurus Fire. Taurus is later deleted by Gemini Spark to power the Andromeda Key. In the manga, Taurus becomes Geo's ally after being defeated.

Zack Temple

Zack, known as Kizamaro Saishoin (最小院 キザマロ, Saishōin Kizamaro) in Japan, is a smart but sometimes rude student. He is one of Luna's helpers. Zack is worried about his height and tries to grow taller. He is also afraid of heights. Zack gets information from his own website, the "Zackpedia." After learning Geo is Mega Man, Zack admires him more.

Zack is the only one of Geo's close friends who hasn't been forced to Wave Change. In the third game, he gets a Wizard named "Pedia," making their combined names "Zackpedia."

Pedia

Pedia is Zack Temple's Wizard companion. Pedia is a very smart Wizard who gives Zack and his friends information.

Patrick Sprigs

Patrick Sprigs, known as Tsukasa Futaba (双葉 ツカサ, Futaba Tsukasa) in Japan, was left alone as a baby. Because of this, Pat has a split personality, with an evil side named Rey Sprigs. Pat is usually nice, but Rey makes him hate the world. He has been in contact with Gemini for a long time.

When Pat and Rey merge, they split into two bodies, forming Gemini Spark. Pat is Gemini Spark White, and Rey is Gemini Spark Black. Their alliance with Gemini makes Geo doubt trusting others. His Japanese name is a play on "futagoza," the Japanese name for the Gemini constellation.

In the anime, the Rey personality is mostly gone. Gemini becomes Gemini Spark Black, and Pat seems to willingly help the FM Planet. Gemini Spark is very strong and often defeats Mega Man. Pat and Gemini secretly plan to destroy the FM Planet. They trick other FM-ians and use them as energy for the Andromeda Key. Gemini Spark White sacrifices his "Black" counterpart to fully restore Andromeda. Geo and Omega-Xis destroy the key, and King Cepheus turns Pat back into a human, erasing his memories.

In the manga, Gemini Spark has one body that switches between Black (aggressive) and White (calmer). Crown Thunder found Gemini Spark as a child and raised him.

AMAKEN Scientists

Aaron Boreal

Aaron Boreal, known as Mamoru Amachi (天地 守, Amachi Mamoru) in Japan, is a good friend of Geo's father, Kelvin Stelar. He is the head of AMAKEN research. Aaron tells Geo and his mother about Kelvin's disappearance. He gives Geo the Visualizer glasses from his father. Aaron helps Geo reach a space station to stop the FM King. In the second game, he upgrades Geo's Star Carrier. In the third game, he works with Tom Dubius at WAZA command. His English name is a pun on the Aurora Borealis.

Tom Dubius

Tom Dubius, known as Shinsuke Utagai (宇田海 深佑, Utagai Shinsuke) in Japan, works at AMAKEN. He is very paranoid because someone once stole his work. He is afraid to trust others. Cygnus, an FM-ian, takes advantage of his fears. Tom tries to crash a satellite on the city in the anime. He later realizes the truth, and Cygnus is defeated.

Cygnus Wing appears in Mega Man Star Force 3 as an optional boss and Tom's Wizard.

Other Characters

Kelvin Stelar

Kelvin Stelar, known as Daigo Hoshikawa (星河 大吾, Hoshikawa Daigo) in Japan, is Geo's father. He is a respected researcher who vanished while trying to contact aliens. He wanted to visit the FM Planet but couldn't as a human. He asked Omega-Xis to turn him into an EM Wave Human. During his transformation, his space station was attacked, and his spirit was left to wander. He was later absorbed by the Crimson Dragon but was freed and returned home in Mega Man Star Force 3.

Hope Stelar

Hope Stelar, known as Akane Hoshikawa (星河 あかね, Hoshikawa Akane) in Japan, is Geo's mother. She wants Geo to go back to school but respects his choices. In the anime, she loves TV shopping and cooking. She also likes to tease Geo about his female friends.

Claud Pincer and Cancer

Claud Pincer, known as Chiyokichi Hasami (狭見 千代吉, Hasami Chiyokichi) in Japan, is a boy who hangs out at the Big Wave store. He meets the FM-ian Cancer because he feels lonely. Claud and Cancer are boastful and proud of their fighting skills. They appear in Mega Man Star Force 2 as an optional boss. Cancer Noise is a power-up in Mega Man Star Force 3.

Cancer (キャンサー, Kyansā) is an FM-ian based on the constellation Cancer. He looks like a crab. When fused with Claud, he becomes Cancer Bubble (キャンサー・バブル, Kyansā Baburu). In the anime, Cancer also becomes a fan of Sonia. He is often the comic relief among the villains.

Detective Bob Copper

Bob Copper, known as Heiji Goyoda (五陽田 ヘイジ, Goyoda Heiji) in Japan, is a detective. He investigates FM-ian incidents and suspects Geo is involved. In the anime, Copper often tries to arrest Mega Man, thinking he is a criminal. He never figures out Geo is Mega Man, but he is suspicious. In his transformed state, he is called Rogue. He wants to find out how Mu was destroyed. Solo prefers to work alone and dislikes Geo's friendships. He was treated like a monster because of his powers, which made him close off his heart.

In the third game, he is joined by a Wizard named Laplace. Laplace turns into a large scimitar for Rogue to use. Solo's goal is to stop Dealer from misusing Murian technology. He reluctantly helps Geo fight Meteor G. Solo has saved Geo many times, often pretending it was just because Geo was in his way. Solo is registered by the Satella Police as No. 002. Manga Series

The Ryūsei no Rockman manga started in CoroCoro Comic in November 2006. The manga is different from the games and anime. Geo is sad about his father and teams up with Omega-Xis. They become Mega Man and fight crime. Geo enters the Wave Coliseum tournament to win "Star Force," hoping it will help him find his father. Gemini Spark steals the Star Force to revive Andromeda, the FM-ian king. Mega Man finds out Andromeda and his father, Kelvin, have merged. After defeating Andromeda, Kelvin is freed and returns home.

Later manga stories focus on characters from the second video game. Geo and Omega-Xis are not in these stories. Instead, the Tribe-On forms (Thunder Zerker, Fire Saurian, and Green Ninja) are separate characters. Zerker seeks revenge on Rogue, who destroyed his tribe. He must fight Rogue's helpers in a tall tower.

Another manga, Shōgeki On Air!! Ryūsei no Rockmen (笑劇オンエア!!流星のロックメ~ン, Shōgeki On Ea!! Ryūsei no Rokkumen, Farce On Air!! Shooting Star Rockman), is a light-hearted story. It seems to be about two different Mega Men.

To promote the third game, Ryo Takamisaki created a new manga series in November 2008. This manga, called Ryūsei no Rockman 3 (流星のロックマン3, Ryūsei no Rokkuman Surī, Shooting Star Rockman 3), follows the game's story more closely. It introduces A. C. Eos and his Wizard Acid, and battles with Spade Magnes and Jack Corvus. This manga ended after only two chapters.
