Mesa is a small city in Franklin County, Washington, United States. In 2020, about 385 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a rich history tied to railroads and farming.
History of Mesa
Mesa was once known by other names like Bluff Wells and Judson. It started as a stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad line in 1883. This railway connected towns like Pasco and Spokane. Mesa was an important stop between Eltopia and Palouse Junction (now Connell).
For many years, people in Mesa got their water from private wells or the railroad's well. But in 1948, the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project changed everything. This big project brought water to the area, which helped farming grow. Mesa officially became a city on June 23, 1955. Today, farming and raising livestock are still very important to the town.
Geography of Mesa
Mesa is located in a place called Esquatzel Coulee. A coulee is like a long, shallow valley or a depression in the land. This means Mesa sits a bit lower than the land around it. The city is found where two main roads meet: U.S. Route 395 and State Route 17.
Route 395 connects Mesa to bigger cities. It goes southwest to the Tri-Cities and northeast to Ritzville. The city covers about 1.64 square miles (4.25 square kilometers) of land.
