The Metropolitan City of Bari (which in Italian is città metropolitana di Bari) is a special area in the Apulia region of Italy. Think of it like a big county that includes a main city and many smaller towns. Its capital city is Bari.
This metropolitan city took the place of the old province of Bari. It includes the city of Bari and about 40 other towns, called comuni (which means "municipalities" or "local councils"). The Metropolitan City of Bari officially started on January 1, 2015.
The Metropolitan City of Bari is led by a Metropolitan Mayor and a Metropolitan Council. Since 2015, the mayor of the capital city, Antonio Decaro, has also been the first mayor of the Metropolitan City.
This area covers about 3,825 square kilometers (1,477 square miles). In 2023, about 1,222,143 people lived there.

Geography of Bari
The Metropolitan City of Bari is located in southeastern Italy. It looks out over the Adriatic Sea. It is in the middle part of the Apulia region.
It shares borders with other areas. To the west, it borders the provinces of Matera and Potenza. To the north, it borders Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. To the south, it borders Taranto and Brindisi.
Land and Hills
The inner part of the area has hills called the Murgia hills. This is a special type of rocky land called karst. Here, you can find the Alta Murgia National Park. This park was created in 2004 and is one of Italy's newest national parks.
Only the area around Bari and the coast are flat. The northern part of the province has many people. This includes cities like Bari, Altamura, Bitonto, Corato, Gravina in Puglia, and Molfetta. The southern part has fewer large cities. Monopoli is the only town there with around 50,000 people.
In the south, near the border with Taranto, is the Itria Valley. This beautiful valley is home to towns like Alberobello and Locorotondo.
Underground Wonders
The area does not have many rivers or lakes on the surface. However, underground rivers have created many caves in the karst landscape. Some famous caves include the Castellana and Putignano caves.
