Millington's Early History

The village of Millington began in the fall of 1834. George Markley and Samuel Jackson were the first to settle there. They built a log cabin by the river. They claimed about 600 acres of land on both sides of the river.

In 1835, they started building a dam to power a sawmill. The sawmill was on the south side of the river. Samuel Jackson came from Pennsylvania. He was known as "General" because he strongly supported Andrew Jackson for president. He also helped build new court buildings in Kendall County.

The Millington Newark Cemetery is on Church Street. It is on a hill overlooking the village. More than 3,000 people are buried there. This includes a veteran from the Revolutionary War.

Samuel's brother, Jesse Jackson, visited in 1836. He liked the area so much that he bought Markley's share. Jesse moved his family to Millington. His house was the first frame house in the village. That same year, the sawmill was finished and started working.
