Where is Millmerran?

Millmerran is located on the Darling Downs. It's about 208 kilometres (129 miles) west of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. The Gore Highway is a main road that goes through the area. Other important roads include the Millmerran–Inglewood Road and the Millmerran–Cecil Plains Road.

A Look at Millmerran's Past

First Peoples of the Land

The land around Millmerran has a rich history. It is part of the traditional country of the Bigambul people. Their language, also called Bigambal, was spoken here. The Giabal people also lived in this area, especially towards Toowoomba.

The name Millmerran is thought to come from Aboriginal words. "Meel" means "eye" and "merran" means "to look out". This makes sense because there's a lookout nearby that Aboriginal people used.

Early European Settlement

European settlers arrived in the Millmerran area in 1841. The Gore brothers started a very large farm called Yandilla station. This farm was huge, covering about 1,780 square kilometres (687 square miles). It even had its own school, telegraph station, and shop!

Later, in 1876, more people started to settle closer together. Edward Walpole bought a piece of land from Yandilla station. In 1881, he opened a general store. This was the start of the town.

How Millmerran Got Its Name

The town's first post office opened in 1883. It was called Back Creek. Then, in 1889, its name changed to Domville. But this didn't last long! In 1894, the name was changed again to Millmerran, which it has been ever since.

Churches and Community Buildings

Over the years, several churches were built in Millmerran:

  • St Francis de Sales Catholic Church: The first Catholic church opened in 1904. It was a small building made of cypress pine. Later, a much larger church was built in 1952, big enough for 300 people. The old church became a church hall.
  • St Alban's Anglican Church: This church was opened in 1907.
  • St Andrew's Presbyterian Church: This church was built in 1922. Many volunteers helped to build it, and the architect designed it for free!

The Railway Arrives

In 1911, the Millmerran railway line reached the town. This was a big deal because it made it easier to transport goods and people.
