In July 2008, McDonald's Australia wanted to open a restaurant in Minyama. The local government, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, did not approve this plan at first. Peter Slipper, who was a member of federal parliament for the area, said that any new buildings should be carefully considered. He wanted to make sure they would not negatively affect the community.
Even though there were discussions, the McDonald's restaurant was eventually built. However, it is not open 24 hours a day. It closes at 11 o'clock each night and opens again at 5 o'clock every morning.
