Miralem Pjanić (born on April 2, 1990) is a professional footballer from Bosnia. He plays as a midfielder for the Russian club CSKA Moscow.

Pjanić started his career at Metz in France. He then moved to another French team, Lyon, in 2008. In 2011, he joined Roma in Italy, where he became known as one of the best midfielders in Serie A.

In 2016, Pjanić signed with Juventus. He was a very important player for them, helping the team win four league titles and two Coppa Italias. He was also chosen for the Serie A Team of the Year several times. In 2017, he was part of the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season when Juventus reached the final.

Pjanić moved to Barcelona in September 2020. He also played on loan for Beşiktaş in Turkey. In 2022, he joined Sharjah in the UAE.

Before playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Pjanić played for Luxembourg's youth teams. He made his senior international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008. He played 115 games and scored 18 goals for his country before retiring from international football in 2024. He also played for Bosnia and Herzegovina in their first major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Early Life and Football Start

Miralem Pjanić was born on April 2, 1990, in Tuzla, which was then part of Yugoslavia. His father, Fahrudin Pjanić, was also a footballer. Miralem became interested in football because of his dad.

His family moved to Luxembourg before the Bosnian War started. When Miralem was seven, his father saw his talent. He joined a local club called FC Schifflange 95. Many clubs from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany noticed him. But in 2004, he decided to join Metz in France.

Starting at Metz

Pjanić joined Metz at age 14. He spent about three years in their youth academy. In the 2005–06 season, he helped the under-16 team win a national championship. He then signed a five-year contract with the club.

At 17, Pjanić made his first professional football appearance for Metz on August 18, 2007. He scored his first professional goal on December 15, 2007. This made him one of the youngest players to score in Ligue 1. Even though Pjanić played very well, Metz was moved down to a lower league. Many big clubs became interested in him.

Moving to Lyon

On June 6, 2008, Pjanić joined Lyon for €7.5 million. He signed a five-year contract. He was seen as a future replacement for the famous player Juninho.

Pjanić started strong in the 2009–10 season. He scored his first goal for Lyon from a free kick in a UEFA Champions League match. He continued to score important goals, including one against Real Madrid in the Champions League. This goal helped Lyon reach the quarter-finals.

Time at Roma

On August 31, 2011, Pjanić signed a four-year deal with the Italian club Roma. The transfer fee was €11 million. He scored his first goal for Roma against Lecce.

In the 2013–14 season, Pjanić became a key player for Roma. He helped the team win their first ten league matches, which was a record. He scored 6 goals and made 6 assists that season. On May 11, 2014, he signed a new contract with Roma.

In the 2015–16 season, Pjanić became known as one of the best free-kick takers in the world. He scored many amazing goals from free kicks. He finished the season with 10 league goals and 12 assists, leading the league in assists for the second year in a row.

Success with Juventus

On June 13, 2016, Pjanić joined Juventus for €32 million. He signed a five-year contract. He scored in his first game for Juventus. In his first season, he won the Coppa Italia and the Serie A title. Juventus also reached the Champions League final but lost to Real Madrid.

Pjanić continued to win titles with Juventus. He helped them win the Coppa Italia again in 2018. He also won the Serie A title for the second time. In his third season, he signed a new five-year contract. He played his 100th game for Juventus in October 2018.

On July 26, 2020, he won his fourth league title with Juventus. He played his last game for the club on August 7, 2020.

Time at Barcelona and Loans

On June 29, 2020, Pjanić moved to Barcelona in Spain. The deal was worth €60 million. He signed a four-year contract. He made his debut on September 27, 2020. However, his time at Barcelona was not very successful. He played 30 games but did not score or assist any goals.

On September 2, 2021, Pjanić went on a season-long loan to Beşiktaş in Turkey. After that, on September 7, 2022, he joined Sharjah in the UAE Pro League.

Most recently, on September 25, 2024, Pjanić joined CSKA Moscow in Russia.

International Career

Playing for Luxembourg Youth Teams

Because Pjanić grew up in Luxembourg, he played for their youth national teams. He played in the 2006 European Under-17 Championship. He even scored 4 goals in one match against Belgium.

In 2008, Pjanić decided he wanted to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina. It took some time to get approval from FIFA and a Bosnian passport.

He made his debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina on August 20, 2008. On March 3, 2010, he scored his first goal for his country. Pjanić was very important in helping Bosnia and Herzegovina qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This was their first major tournament ever!

He played in the World Cup and scored a goal against Iran, helping Bosnia and Herzegovina win their first World Cup game. On March 31, 2021, he played his 100th game for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He retired from international football on May 4, 2024. He played 115 games and scored 18 goals for his country.

Pjanić is a very talented and creative midfielder. He is known for his excellent passing, dribbling skills, and great vision on the field. These skills help him create scoring chances for his teammates.

He often plays in the center of the midfield. He can also play deeper to control the game or further forward to attack. Pjanić is famous for his powerful and accurate shots from far away. He is also a fantastic set-piece specialist, meaning he is very good at taking free kicks and corners. Many people, including his former teammate Juninho, have called him one of the best free-kick takers in the world.

Personal Life

Miralem Pjanić is a Muslim and is from the Bosniak ethnic group. He has a son named Edin with his girlfriend, Josepha. Pjanić is very good with languages. Besides his native Bosnian, he can speak Luxembourgish, French, English, German, Italian, and Spanish.

He has said that he has been a fan of Real Madrid since he was a child.
